Between June 1994 and March 2013, more than 60 clinical trials have been conducted in an attempt to determine the optimal dose-fractionation and irradiation method using carbon ion radiotherapy for the treatment of specific diseases. The HIMAC passive beam delivery system has been showing reliable and stable performance for last 19 years, and a total of more than 7000 patients have so far been registered for treatment. The categories of disease that can be treated in routine clinical practice include head and neck cancers, skull base tumors, ocular melanoma, lung cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, pelvic recurrences of rectal cancer, prostate cancer, bone and soft-tissue sarcomas and re-irradiation after conventional radiotherapy.
