A clinical trial was first initiated in 1996 to evaluate the safety and efficacy of carbon ion radiotherapy for bone and soft tissue sarcomas not suitable for surgery. As of February 2011, a total of 800 patients were enrolled in the clinical trials. Through a dose escalation trial and a subsequent fixed dose trial, it was revealed that carbonion radiotherapy provided definite local control and offered a survival advantage without unacceptable morbidity for patients with bone and soft tissue cancers that were either difficult or impossible to cure using other modalities.2nd NIRS-ETOILE Joint Symposium on Carbon Ion Therap
