Plutonium was introduced into the environment mainly from the fallout of atmospheric nuclear weapons tests. There has been an increasing interest to study the distribution of Pu and its isotopes in the western North Pacific Ocean due to the application potential for tracing oceanographic processes occurring in the region and the need for radiological assessment.
