The article presents the subject of risk in commercial transactions in the area of international trade. Its goal is to analyze the role, significance and place occupied by export credit insurance as a tool of supporting international trade. The author points at the significance of possibilities of using external financing in the companies’ activity, and identifies the problems encountered in this area and the ways of coping with them. The role of states and institutions in this process, with particular emphasis on export credit agencies, is also described.
