Goree, discussing the wellbeing of his brothers Langston and Edwin. He explains, they have recoverd from their illness and expresses that there is no need to worry about them. Goree also discusses his Army's recent defeat at Fort Donelson, and how it has affected the mentality of the men. Thomas expresses that his brother Robert (Bob) should enlist in the Army and find a regiment close to home, he feels that it is time for those capable to enlist, and help win the war
