Enhancement and improvement of higher education are becoming important issues in Japan. In 1993, the National Institute of Multimedia Education started a research project, "The development of self-directed learning programs to improve university education based on video-recordings of teaching and learning processes." This article reviews studies of teaching and learning processes which the author, a member of the project, conducted. It included: the perspectives of research on learning; analyses of observational and experimental data of learning processes; significance of the research; chronological table of the themes.
