Toxoglossate (poison-tongued) gastropods are one of the most successful animal groups that use venom to capture their prey. These marine animals are traditionally assigned to the families, Conidae (cone snails), Terebridae (auger snails), and Turridae (turrids). Here we report the first molecular phylogeny for the Terebridae. Three mitochondrial genes, 12S, 16S, and COI, were sequenced from 156 terebrid samples to reconstruct the molecular phylogeny. Our findings indicate that there is little uniformity between the former shell morphology based genus-level classification and clades recognized by molecular characters.
