A handful of surviving accounts describing César Franck’s playing indicate that he brought contemporary piano techniques to the organ through the adaptation of pianistic legato, legatissimo, staccato, and arpeggiation. The use of these techniques on the organ would have been natural to Franck because of his educational background, which included the intense study of piano performance. Unfortunately, without any surviving recordings of his own performances, it is hard to judge how and where he would have executed these different types of touch and arpeggiation.
