This study examined the impact of the Texas Student Success Initiative (SSI) on retention rates and dropouts in a district located in the Northeast area of Harris County. The Texas Student Success Initiative known as SSI requires students in the third, fifth and eighth grades to pass the state mandated exam in Mathematics and Reading in order to be promoted to the next grade. Students who do not pass the exams may be promoted via a grade placement committee with required interventions.
