Dalrymple Appoints Anthony Swain Benson, \u2700, to NEJD Judgeship

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Jack Dalrymple today appointed Bottineau attorney Anthony Swain Benson to the Northeast Judicial District Court bench. Benson replaces Michael Sturdevant who retired in September. “Swain is an accomplished attorney who is well respected by his peers,” Dalrymple said “His integrity and extensive experience will be a great asset to the Northeast Judicial District. Swain brings to the position a wealth of legal experience and an unwavering commitment to justice and public service.” Benson, a fourth generation attorney in Bottineau, is a partner in the Benson Law Office and has served as the Bottineau County Assistant State’s Attorney for 15 years. As a county prosecutor, Benson has managed a wide range of criminal and noncriminal cases including major crime offenses, child support enforcement, juvenile court proceedings and he has provided legal counsel to local law enforcement and Bottineau County commissioners. Benson has also served as the attorney for the city of Bottineau for 10 years as well as interim state’s attorney in neighboring Rolette and Renville counties, and as a special assistant state’s attorney in Rolette, Pierce and Renville counties. Serving near the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation, Benson has written briefs, made arguments and has gained other valuable experience related to complex jurisdictional issues. His civil law experience includes family law issues, estate planning and real estate law. Benson earned an Associate Degree in Mathematics from Dakota College at Bottineau in 1991, and a Bachelor Degree in University Studies from North Dakota State University in 1994. He earned his law degree at the University of North Dakota School of Law, graduating with distinction in 2000. Past president of the Bottineau Jaycees, Benson has received the C. William Brownfield Memorial Award for outstanding community service. Benson is a member of the Bottineau Fire Department and the Bottineau County Dive Rescue Squad. He is also active in the First Lutheran Church of Bottineau and the Metigoshe Ministries
