UND to commemorate ‘Constitution and Citizenship Day’ Sept. 17

The University of North Dakota\u27s Department of Political Science and Public Administration, in conjunction with Pi Sigma Alpha / Public Affairs Club and the Master of Public Administration Student Organization (MPASO), will commemorate Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, at 5 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17, in Gamble Hall. The University community and public are invited to the event for a viewing of Great Discussion, with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, on the uniqueness and importance of the constitutional order of the United States. UND political science faculty members Dana Harsell and Aaron Ley will lead a discussion after the program. Constitution Day and Citizenship Day is observed each year to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1778, and recognize all who, by coming of age or by naturalization, have become citizens. The first commemoration was in 1940, when congress passed a joint resolution authorizing and requesting the President to issue annually a proclamation setting aside the third Sunday in May for the public recognition of all who had attained the status of American Citizenship. In 2004, under U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd\u27s urging, Congress officially changed the name of this day to Constitution Day and Citizenship Day
