This paper studies the case of Argentina’s automotive industry in the period 1959-1974. During the “difficult phase” of import substitution industrialization (ISI), the developmentalist strategy attracted foreign direct investment as a way of overcoming external constraints. The automotive industry was the archetype of this process and the sector to which the bulk of foreign fixed capital investments were directed to, thus becoming the “engine” of industrial expansion. While the literature identifies a positive impact of the settlement of automotive plants on the local productive structure, it also acknowledges the existence of noticeable productive deficiencies that characterized these firms.
