This paper investigates the nature of tours undertaken by public transport and car. Using a new approach to the typology of tours, which takes into account not only the number but also the spatial distribution of activities chained into a tour, the paper sheds light on the reasons why findings in the existing research literature conflict. Descriptive and modelling analyses on a home-based tour dataset created from the Sydney Household Travel Survey are presented to show that tours using car or public transport are different in nature.
