Railway systems are often characterised by high traffic density and heterogeneous traffic that is sensitive to disturbances. How disturbances propagate and which actions to take in order to minimise the consequences for multiple stakeholders are discussed here. An optimisation approach to the problem of re-scheduling railway traffic in an n-tracked network when a disturbance has occurred is presented. Computational results from experiments using data from the Swedish railway traffic system are presented along with a discussion about theoretical and practical strengths and limitations
