The aim of this paper is to contribute to the analyses of the determinants of public transport use in urban areas by studying a successful case: that of Spanish suburban railways. The estimation of an aggregate demand function is carried out using panel data from 11 urban areas. Short- and long-run elasticities with respect to both prices and a quality measure are obtained. The results are used to discuss the policy alternatives that RENFE (the publicly owned operator of public transit in Spain) faces in order to increase its revenue in the future
