ARNEY HEADS CHEROKEE CENTER Dr. Lawrence H. Arney, associate professor of higher education and former assistant dean of the Graduate School, is the new director of the Cherokee Center. The Cherokee Center is an off-campus resident- credit center on the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians. Dr. Arney succeeds Roy Douthitt who resigned earlier in the summer to accept a position at the Kuwait Language Center in Kuwait. A native of Morganton, Dr. Arney is a graduate of Western Carolina where he was a varsity quarterback on the Catamount football team. He earned a master's degree in education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a doctorate in education at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He also did postgraduate work at Auburn University, specializing in mathematics as a National Science Foundation student. Dr. Arney wrote a proposal that obtained a $37,800 grant in 1972 for a fellowship program to train English teachers for community colleges. Two years later, he won a $32,500 grant to keep the program going and in 1976, a third award of $25,500 enabled WCU to conduct a summer institute for community college English teachers. In 1975, he was the author of a proposal to establish a broadly based advancement program that resulted in a $1.7 million AIDP federal grant to WCU. Included in the program was development of the Cherokee Center and establishment of a counseli ng program for Cherokee students. At that time, the grant was the largest single award e'!~r made to the university. READING THEATRE PERFORMS MONDAY The University Reading Theatre, a nonprofit professional company composed of actresses and actors of star stature, will present an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway play, "The Trial of Peter Zenger," Monday in the form· of a dramatic reading at 8 p.m. in the recital hall of the Music-English Building. "The Trial of Peter Zenger" recalls a true event in the history of the early colonies when Zenger, a New York City printer, was tried for seditious libel for exposing the unscrupulous activities of a new and incompetent governor. The trial occurred in 1734-35. It is well known for establishing the principle of freedom of the press. The script for the dramatic reading was arranged by Lucille Calvert Pallen, director and founder of the University Reading Theatre. Mrs. Pallen has professional experience on stage and in radio and television. She formed the University Reading Theatre as an outgrowth of the Reading Theatre she established in 1962 at C.W. Post College of Long Island University. The performance at Western is sponsored by the Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Committee. DAY IS OCT. 15 -3-~------~------------------------~ A Career Exploration Day Oct. 15 will be for undergraduate students interested in obtaining first-hand information on career possiQilities with businesses and industries. Between 30 and 35 firms are expected to have representatives on the campus for talks with students. The program will be from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center. The day is being sponsored by the WCU Placement Office, the Office for Cooperative Education and Alpha Kappa Psi student business fraternity. Western Carolina University faculty members are invited to meet with the employer representatives as a means of maintaining current information on what employers may look for in students studying in various areas. Him Matus of the Public Information staff· won the 1980-81 District 1 Educational Office Personnel of the Year Award given by the North Carolina Association of Educational Office Personnel. Mrs. Matus earlier won the 1979-80 EOP Award of the WCU Chapter of NCAEOP. She will be the western district's nominee for the statewide. EOP Award to be given in Raleigh at the state association annual meeting March 18-21, 1981. MARJORIE BAKER LECTURESHIP The department of nursing has established the Marjorie G. Baker Memorial Lectureship Fund in honor of the late Dr. Baker, former department head and associate dean of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, who died last fall. An initial goal of $5,000 has been set for the fund which will be administered through the Development Foundation to sponsor a speaker each year. Contributions to the Marjorie G. Baker Memorial Lectureship Fund should be directed to the Development Foundation of Western Carolina University Inc., Drawer WCU, Cullowhee, 28723. -4- THREE SPECIAL PROGRAMS GET NEW FEDERAL FUNDS Western has received $264,826 from the U.S. Department of Education to continue its Upward Bound, Special Services, and Talent Search programs. Now in its ninth year at Western, Upward Bound attempts to identify students of average and above-average abilities from low-income families and help them develop their potential. With its grant of $104,821, the program will be able to serve 50 high school students in a five-county area, said Pat R. Carter, director of all three programs. Special Services, which was awarded $91,519, provides college freshmen and sophomores with tutoring, special academic classes and labs, counseling, and advisement. The threeyear- old program is expected to serve 150 university students this year. Talent Search, which received a $68,486 grant, is designed to give educationally talented but disadvantaged youths and some special qualifying adults a chance to continue their education or training. The program, which was started by WCU last year, is expected to serve 700 high school students or secondary and post-secondary dropouts within a seven-county area this year. MOUNTAIN HERITAGE CENTER WANTS VOLUNTEERS Western's Mountain Heritage Center has formed a volunteer organization for people interested in regional mountain culture and in helping the center expand its services. The auxiliary group will be called "The Volunteers of the Mountain Heritage Center." "We have been contacted by several people who have interests in helping the Mountain Heritage Center with its work in the collection, preservation, display, and study of mountain culture," said Cliff Lovin, director of the center. "We feel there is, in the Volunteers, a possibility for a mutually beneficial arrangement. People who want to contribute to heritage efforts would have the opportunity to do so, and, while broadening their involvement could help us provide expanded services both in the center itself, and in the region." Dr. Lovin emphasized that volunteers need not possess any special skills. Those interested and willing to work will be trained in appropriate areas. Dr. Lovin said he hoped volunteers could serve as museum guides, work in preservation of artifacts and manscripts, perform clerical tasks, or assist in the actual construction of exhibits and displays. NAMES IN THE NEWS WILMA COSPER (head, Home Economics) addressed the Cullowhee Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) on "The Role of the Governor's Task Force on North Carolina Families and the White House Conference on Families in Families Facing Change," Sept. 21. WILMA COSPER, JUDY DOWELL, DAVIA VEACH, NOELLE KEHRBERG, and JOYCE BALDWIN (all Home Economics) participated in a Revolving Faculty Exchange program with a team of faculty and administration in the School of Consumer Science and Applied Professions, Winthrop College, Rock Hill (S.C.), Sept. 21-22. AARON HYATT (dean, Graduate School) was the speaker at the Graham County United Way Kick-Off Dinner Sept. 25. The dinner was held at Fontana Inn. TOM O'TOOLE (History) presented a program on Central Africa to the Southern Atlantic States Association for Asian and African Studies Sept. 19-20 at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg. He also participated in the meeting as a member of the Executive Committee. TIM LIBERTY and YVONNE SADDLER (Human Services, Communication Disorders Program) have been selected to serve as committee members with the North Carolina Speech, Hearing, and Language Association. Robinson was named by Gov. James Hunt Tuesday to a 20-member blue ribbon study commission to explore establishment of a rural development corporation in North Carolina. He is one of three Western North Carolinians named to the commission. Others are State Rep. Liston B. Ramsey of Marshall and Asheville newspaper publisher Richard B. Wynne, president of the Western North Carolina regional leadership council. Creation of the study panel and appointment of its members were announced by Gov. Hunt at a rural development forum of local, state and federal officials in Raleigh. Hunt said he sees the proposed corporation "as the catalyst for economic development throughout the rural areas of our state." He said the corporation "could assess feasibility of investments and develop specific business plans to promote these investments. It could identify and help entrepreneurs, help communities provide services and facilities they need to accommodate new businesses, and it could provide technical assistance to new businesses to get them off the ground." Hunt said the rural development corporation would be "an investment in North Carolina and its people. The return will more than pay off what we put in." The corporation, he said, could help local communities set up industrial parks, expand water and sewer services, locate sources of capital, identify businesses suitable for specific communities and assist in obtaining various grants and other funds available for economic development projects." The 20-member commission is charged with studying the feasibility of such a corporation and making recommendations to the governor on how it should be organized, funded and function. The governor asked the commission to complete its work within 90 days and send the report to him through Sec. of Natural and Economic Resources Howard Lee. Robinson, whose scientific career centers on agriculture and rural development, established the Center for Improving Mountain Living (CIML) at WCU. The center, in turn, helped to establish WNC Tomorrow and the center's executive staff serves as staff to the regional leadership group. Chancellor Robinson has led CIML into international rural development activities as well. In Nepal, a $28 million rural aid and development program proposal was developed under CIML leadership and its former director, Mark Freeman, now directs the program for a United States assistance team. Additionally, Robinson is head of a joint organization of universities and international private voluntary organizations whose overseas work is largely in rural development and relief activities. TWO MAJOR GLASS ART EXHIBITS TO OPEN Two major glass art exhibits which have national significance will debut with special ceremonies Sunday, Oct. 12, at WCU with accompanying lectures by Harvey K. Littleton, one of the founders of the American studio glass movement. The two exhibits, "North Carolina Glass '80" and the "Erwin Eisch Retrospective," feature internationally known glass artists and more than 100 exceptional pieces. Both exhibits will be on display at WCU through Nov. 5. The North Carolina Glass Exhibit, to be located in the gallery of Belk Building, will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 until 4 p.m. The Eisch exhibit, to be located in the Chelsea Gallery of Hinds University Center, will be open from 8 a.m. until midnight daily, including weekends. The North Carolina Glass show will open first Sunday with a public reception for the artists from 2 until 3 p.m. given by Chancellor and Mrs. H. F. Robinson in the foyer of Belk Building. At 3 p.m. in the recital hall of WCU's Music-English Building, Littleton will present a slide lecture on "The Art of Erwin Eisch." Then at 4 p.m. there will be an opening reception for the Eisch exhibit in the Chelsea Gallery. On Monday, Oct. 13, Littleton will present a second lecture on "Building Studio Glass Equipment" in Room 104 of Belk Building at 9 a.m. At 10:15, there will be an open glass blowing demonstration in the Belk studio. There also will be a glass blowing demonstration from 2 until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, by David Nichols in Belk Building. Nichols, whose work is included in the N. C. Glass collection, is artist in residence at WCU. -2- Also included in the North Carolina show are works by artists William Bernstein of Celo, Jak Brewer of Zionville, Dale Brownscombe of Bakersville, Fritz Dreisbach of Penland, Gil Johnson of Celo, Harvey Littleton of Spruce Pine, John Littleton and Kate Vogel of Bakersville, John Nygren of Walnut Cove, Mark Peiser of Penland, Dick Ritter of Bakersville and Jan Williams of Bakersville. The Eisch exhibit will be comprised of 40 pieces of glass and 25 paintings and drawings. Both the exhibits and lectures are open to the public without charge. PETRAUSKAS LECTURE SERIES Dr. Raymond J. Petrauskas, coordinator of the Head Injury Section of the Ontario Crippled Childrens Program in Toronto, Canada, will present a series of lectures on learning disabilities and closed head injuries Oct. 15-17 in Room 104 of Killian Building. Petrauskas' visit is sponsored by the Visiting Scholar Program and the department of human services' communication disorders program, formerly the speech and hearing program. His lectures are open to the university community and the public without charge. "Brain-Behavior Relationship and Learning" will be the subject of Petrauskas' first lecture from 1 until 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. Thursday, Oct. 16, he will present three lectures dealing with team efforts to diagnose and treat children with learning disabilities. The first lecture, from 9 until 10:30 a.m., will concentrate on diagnosis. The second, from 1 until 2:30 p.m., will focus on treatment, and the third, from 7 until 10 p.m., will encompass both topics. Petrauskas will end the lecture series with a talk on "Closed Head Injuries and the Allied Professional" from 9 until 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17. Petrauskas, who has taught courses in psychology and published numerous articles, including a test on reading problems in children, obtained his doctorate in psychology from the University of Windsor, Ontario. EIGHTEEN BANDS TO COMPETE SATURDAY Eighteen high school bands from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee will be competing at WCU Saturday, Oct. 11, in the 11th annual Mountain Classic Marching Band Championship. Competition begins at 10 a.m. in Whitmire Stadium and continues until 4:20 p.m. when WCU's marching band performs in exhibition. Award ceremonies follow at 4:45 p.m. Dr. Joseph R. Scagnoli, WCU director of bands, is the competition coordinator. There are four overall classes in the Competition--Class A, for bands with 50 or fewer players; Class AA for bands with 51-64 players; Class AAA for bands with 65-79 players; and Class AAAA for bands with 80 or more players. Only members who actually play musical instruments are considered in determining class. Admission to the 1980 WCU championship will be $3 for adults and $2 for students. Senior citizens and pre-school children will be admitted without charge. Tickets will be on sale at the stadium gate.
