Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center on Friday, May 1. The festival, which begins at 7 p.m., will feature short works in a range of genres created by students from the Film and Television Production Program and the School of Stage and Screen. “It’s our premiere,” said Kasey N. Summers, event organizer and senior from Phillipsburg, New Jersey. “We all dream of having polished work on the big screen, and this is the opportunity to celebrate the hours of hard work put in by each student. From horror movies to silent lms, our top-notch programs encourage lm-lovers to come experience the talent, art and entertainment they’ve come to expect from Western Carolina University’s School of Stage and Screen.” The senior thesis short films “Lost Soles” and “Cold Coffee” will be featured at the event. “Lost Soles,” a dark comedy, introduces Neil Garrison, an unassuming college freshman who has his world turned upside down when the search for a missing shoe turns into more than he could have possibly anticipated. With the help of his childhood friend Gideon, Neil is faced with a decision that will change his life – for better or worse. “Being the director of photography, or DP, for ‘Lost Soles’ was one of the greatest learning experiences I’ve encountered,” said senior Samantha Hunt. “You really have to throw yourself into the lmmaking process. At rst, I was denitely worried that I wouldn’t be able to understand the full work ethic of being a DP. However, by the time we wrapped, I ended up walking away with so much more confidence and knowledge, especially after working with such a talented and supportive crew.” The second lm, “Cold Coffee,” is based on the theme that the day after a break-up is always the hardest. The dramatic comedy follows college student and resident assistant Gwen Easton as she goes through the first 24 hours after heartbreak. For the Controlled Chaos Film Festival, students raised between $4,000 and $6,000 to create each senior project, lmed and shot with a state-of-the-art F65 CineAlta camera that was donated to WCU by Sony. “Working on the Sony-donated F65 was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life,” said camera operator Nicole Baskin. “To work with such quality and clarity was challenging and expanded my skills. I hope to one day work with the F65 professionally.” Advance tickets to the Controlled Chaos Film Festival can be purchased for $10 each in the School of Stage and Screen oce located on the second oor of the Stillwell Building in Room 233. Tickets are $10 cash at the door. Proceeds and donations benet the Motion Picture Student Project Fund, which helps students with the cost of creating their senior thesis films. SEARCH Search Home About Archives Subscribe Contact WCU Home April 15, 2015 Email This Post Print This Post Share | Rick Margitza TOP STORIES Annual Jazz Festival to feature saxophonist Rick Margitza on April 25 Saxophone master Rick Margitza will be the special guest performing and instructing at the 2015 Jazz Festival at Western Carolina University on Saturday, April 25. All classes, rehearsals and performances will be open to the public free of charge and held in the Coulter Building recital hall. Margitza will instruct a jazz improvisation master class for WCU students at 12:30 p.m., followed by rehearsals at 2:30 p.m. with the WCU Jazz Ensemble and at 4 p.m. with the Pavel Wlosok Trio. Performances scheduled for the evening include Margitza with the jazz ensemble at 7:30 p.m. and with the trio at 8:30 p.m. Margitza’s visit in the area also will include a show with the Pavel Wlosok Trio at 8 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at ISIS Music Hall in Asheville. There is a charge for admission and reservations are recommended. Reared in a family of musicians and originally trained on the violin at age 4 by his grandfather, Margitza switched to the saxophone, studied with classical and jazz artists at several schools, and earned his degree in music from Loyola University in New Orleans. After living in the Big Easy, Margitza moved to the Big Apple in 1989 and performed in New York and elsewhere with McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson, Tony Williams, Chick Corea and Miles Davis. He has led his own band, recorded 10 albums and composed two symphonies and a saxophone concerto, among other works. WCU’s Jazz Festival also will feature bassist Mike McGuirk and drummer Andrew Swift. Both will participate in a 1:30 p.m. rhythm section master class April 25. McGuirk grew up in Portland, Oregon, and received his bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from the University of North Texas, where he studied with Je Bradetich. In 1997, he won the International Society of Bassists jazz bass competition. Since moving to New York, he has played and/or recorded with John Abercrombie, David Liebman, Don Friedman, Andy Lavern, Walt Weiskopf and many others. Swift also performs regularly in the clubs of New York, as well as the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Lake George Jazz festival and the Sydney Opera House. He is on the faculty at Manhattanville College and three years ago released his rst album, “Swift Kick,” recorded with George Cables, Ryan Kisor, Eric Alexander, Dwayne Burno and Wycliffe Gordon. Billed as kinder, gentler versions of the hit TV show “Shark Tank,” competitions included the “Bright Ideas Rocket Pitches” event, a series of fast-paced proposals from entrepreneurs and inventors aimed at potential investors, and the “Promising Business Acceleration” contest, in which owners of promising existing businesses make proposals for additional capital to accelerate growth. Paul Hedgecock of Asheville won rst prize of $2,500 in the “Bright Ideas Rocket Pitch” competition for his pitch for Ugo Tour, a travel and tourism smartphone app for Western North Carolina points of interest. Second place and $1,000 went to Emily Edmonds of Sylva for her concept for WNC Brewhub, a proposal to establish a shared beer production and distribution facility for breweries across the region. In the “Promising Business Acceleration” competition, Ted and Flori Pate of Asheville claimed rst prize and $2,500 to build their business Local Flavor, which provides a free app for smartphones that promotes only local, non-franchise businesses. Stewart and Tammy Cook of Hickory took second prize and $1,000 for Cook Consulting App Garden University, a virtual training tool that provides training for substitute teachers customized for individual school districts. The LEAD:Innovation conference included nine “Bright Ideas Rocket Pitches” and six “Promising Business Acceleration” presentations, said Ed Wright , WCU associate professor of global management and strategy and among the event organizers. “The subjects of the pitches were quite varied, ranging from an online physicians’ tele-health start-up to new products for stroke rehabilitation,” Wright said. “Overall, the quality of the pitches was excellent, and we look forward to doing this event on a larger scale next year.” About 100 entrepreneurs, prospective entrepreneurs, investors and others interested in the economic development of Western North Carolina attended the entrepreneurship and small business summit. The conference was part of a series of scheduled “spin-o events” from November’s LEAD:WNC, a one-day summit convened by WCU to discuss solutions leading to sustainable economic and community development. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, to present their annual spring concert. Three guest performers will be featured in the presentation of works by composers including Travis Cross, Frank Erickson, Richard Saucedo, John Philip Sousa and Jaime Teixidor. Two music education majors, senior Daniel Scott and junior Alaina Seidle, will conduct the Symphonic Band playing works by Michael Markowski and Samuel Hazo. The Symphonic Band will accompany Bradley Ulrich, professor of trumpet, as he performs Alexander Arutiunian’s “Concerto for Trumpet.” Conductors David Starnes, director of athletic bands, and Dillon Ingle, graduate conductor, also will lead works during the evening of music. SEARCH Search Home About Archives Subscribe Contact WCU Home April 8, 2015 Email This Post Print This Post Share | NOTEWORTHY NEWS Battle of the Plug continues through April 25 The fourth annual Battle of the Plug competition in which Western Carolina University and Appalachian State University compete to see which university’s residence halls can conserve the most energy is underway, and this year three other North Carolina higher education institutions have joined the fray. The competition began April 4 and will continue through Saturday, April 25. This year, WCU also is competing for bragging rights against the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Meredith College and Elizabeth City State University, said Lauren Bishop, WCU’s chief sustainability officer. The in-state competition is part of a larger national contest that involves more than 150 schools. WCU placed in the top 10 nationally last year, Bishop said. Each institution will measure which of its residence halls saves the greatest percentage of energy as well as how the percentage of energy reduction in participating buildings overall compares with the percentage of energy reduction at the rival institution. Campuswide Battle of the Plug events at WCU include free giveaways each week at locations across campus and in residence halls. The competition also will be represented at Cat Bash on Monday, April 20, and during the Earth and Wellness Celebration on Wednesday, April 22, Bishop said. SEARCH Search Home About Archives Subscribe Contact WCU Home April 15, 2015 Email This Post Print This Post Share | Bruce Yandle NOTEWORTHY NEWS ‘Bootleggers, Baptists’ theory of regulation subject of April 22 talk The Western Carolina University Free Enterprise Club will celebrate Earth Day by hosting Bruce Yandle, dean emeritus of Clemson University’s College of Business and Behavioral Science, who will present a lecture titled “Bootleggers and Baptists in the Garden of Good & Evil” on Wednesday, April 22. The talk, which is open to the public free of charge, will be held in Room 102 of the Killian Building on the WCU campus beginning at 4:15 p.m. A question-and-answer session will follow. The lecture will focus on the “bootleggers/Baptist” theory of regulation, which holds that many regulatory outcomes are generated by coalitions of strange bedfellows in which each side pursues the same regulatory goal, but for very different reasons. The theory takes its name from the fact that both bootleggers and Baptists support laws that prevent the sale of liquor on Sundays, with one group favoring the law for avowed public interest reasons while the other group wants to eliminate competition at least one day a week, s a i d Edward Lopez, WCU professor of economics and BB&T Distinguished Professor of Capitalism. Similar coalitions of environmentalists and industrialists have worked for environmental rules that enrich both groups, according to the theory. “Bruce Yandle’s theory of bootleggers and Baptists lets us see how special interests join forces with – and take advantage of – moralistic defenders of the public good,” said Lopez, faculty adviser to the Free Enterprise Club. “Actual regulations don’t really promote the common good as much as advance the interest of a persuasive few. Dr. Yandle shows how this is especially true in the area of environmental regulations.” Yandle is a consultant, writer and speaker on economics, the environment and political economy. A longtime faculty member at Clemson University, he also is Mercatus Center Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Economics at George Mason University. His quarterly Economic Situation report oers coverage of national and regional economies and is distributed by Clemson University’s Strom Thurmond Institute and the Mercatus Center. An environmental economist by training, Yandle has authored, co-authored or edited 17 books, including “Bootleggers and Baptists: Understanding America’s Regulatory Journey.” He also serves as senior fellow emeritus at the Property and Environment Research Center in Bozeman, Montana, where he writes and speaks regularly on environmental regulations. Yandle served in Washington on two occasions, rst as a senior economist at the White House during the Ford administration and later as executive director of the Federal Trade Commission in the Reagan administration. Closer to home, he was member and chairman of the South Carolina State Board of Economic Advisors, member and chairman of the Spartanburg Methodist College board of trustees, and member of the board of trustees of the Foundation of Economic Education.
