Click on the link in the “Related Materials” field to access recent issues.reporter CRAFTS EXHIBIT TO OPEN HERE More than 60 western North Carolina craftsmen have been invited to show their handiwork in the 1974 Regional Crafts Exhibit opening April 7 in the art gal­lery of Carol Grotnes Belk Building. The exhibit, which will open with a reception featuring folk music, includes quilts, baskets, pottery, jewelry, wood-carving and weaving. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday through April 28. SCHEDULE OF FILMS ANNOUNCED The Film Conspiracy has announced its spring quarter film series. CONCERT CHOIR MAKES ANNUAL TOUR The annual spring tour of the WCU Concert Choir includes seven concerts in North and South Carolina April 3-7. The group consists of 34 voices under the direction of Dr. James E. Dooley, acting dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The tour itinerary includes perfor­mances in Asheville, Shelby, Charlotte, and Gastonia, and in Columbia and Charleston, S. C. FACULTY-STAFF NEWSLETTER April 5, 1974 PROPOSED AMENDMENTS DEFEATED The faculty Thursday defeated amend­ments to the proposed new Constitution that would have seated vice-chancellors as ex-officio voting members in the pro­posed new Senate (they now serve in the present Faculty-Administration Senate); made deans eligible for election to the proposed Senate (they now serve ex-officio in the F-S Senate, would be in­eligible to serve in the proposed struc­ture) ; changed the proposed Faculty Sen­ate to a Faculty-Administration Senate (an editorial change that would have stemmed from the other amendments had they been adopted); and declared that the chancellor "shall" be the presiding officer of the Senate (he is the presid­ing officer of the present Senate but former Acting Chancellor McEniry began a practice of not presiding, and the chancellor could preside under terms of the new Constitution if he wished). The changes, requested by Chancellor- Elect Robinson, failed to receive a two-thirds majority vote. The count was 87-55 in favor. A series of editorial amendments was approved by voice vote with no audible votes against them. NEWS BRIEFS "The Art of Weaving," a lecture and slide show, will be presented by J. C. Hubbard of the textile department at Clemson University April 11 at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of Carol Grotnes Belk Building. The program is sponsored by the arts and crafts group of the Newcomers Club. Telephone numbers in the Computer Center have been changed to 293-7282. WITH THE FACULTY Tom O1Toole, assistant professor of history, attended the Southern Associa­tion of Africanists Curriculum Devel­opment Project meeting held March 28 - 29 at the Quail Roost Conference Center in Durham. Dr. William Hall, research economist and editor of publications of the Eco­nomic Development Center, and Dr. Lloyd Bacon, assistant professor of sociology and anthropology, participated in the N. C. Demographic Workshop held March 21-22 in Chapel Hill. Sponsored by the Carolina Population Center and the Office of State Planning, the workshop involved researchers from state and private universities, state and federal agencies and private indus­try. Dr. Wilma B. Cosper, associate pro­fessor of home economics, attended the Southeastern Council on Family Relations annual conference held March 17 - 19 at the University of Alabama. Dr. Cosper was the delegate from the N.C. Family Life Council and presided over two workshop sessions. Rhoda L. Moyer, acting head of the Department of N ursing, was among more than 600 nurse educators who attended a recent three-day meeting in Denver, Colo, of the National League for Nurs­ing Council of Baccalaureate and High­er Degree Programs. Dr. Lee Minor, assistant professor of mathematics, was one of 25 partici­pants in a National Science Foundation Chautauqua-Type Short Course held re­cently at Clark College in Atlanta, Ga. Dr. Minor's project dealt with a mathe­matical model designed to forecast in­termediate trend changes in stock mar­ket averages. Dr. Robert Ray, associate professor of health and physical education, pre­sented an invited paper, "Interrelating Athletics and Physical Education at the College Level," to the Southern District meeting of the American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recrea­tion. Other WCU faculty members who attended the March 1-3 meeting were Dr. Charles Schrader, Betty Peele and Robert Oliver of the health and phys­ical education faculty. Dr. Lawrence H. Arney, assistant dean of the Graduate School, attended the annual convention of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges held Feb. 24-27 in Washington, D. C. Dr. Hoyt Ponder, clinical director of the Developmental Evaluation Clinic, and Dr. Hugh Matthews, director of Uni­versity Health Services, represented regional health planning interests and university human resource concerns at a meeting of the state and federal employes of the Appalachian Regional Commission held March 18 in Asheville. Dr. Matthews also attended the meeting of the Southern Student Health Association held March 21-23 in Athens, Ga. He is secretary-treasurer of the organization. Dr. Perry Kelly; head of the art de­partment, has two woven tapestries on exhibit at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. The two works were selected for the sales gallery as part of the museum's 1974 Piedmont Crafts Exhibition. Blaine Eldridge, assistant professor of art, was recently honored with a commission to produce two blown glass works for the North Carolina National Bank's award to the Top Career Woman of 1974. One work will be given to the woman selected and a companion piece will be added to the permanent collect­ion of the Mint Museum in Charlotte. Dr. Clifford Lovin, professor of his­tory, and Dr. James H. Horton, head of the biology department, attended the annual meeting of the Danforth Associa­tion March 22-24 in Hampton, Va. Dr. Nora Graves, professor of English, attended a celebration for Eudora Welty, 1973 Pulitzer Prize winner, held Feb. 14-15 at Hollins College, Va. FACULTY-STAFF NEWSLETTER reporter AAUW SEEKS OUTSTANDING JUNIOR The WCU branch of the American Assoc­iation of University Women has announced that applications are now being accepted for the AAUW award for outstanding achievement by a junior woman. Candidates for the award, designed to encourage women students to seek and accept positions of leadership in univer­sity and community life, must have junior standing and a "B" average academically. The award will include a minimum stipend of $100. Applications must be submitted by April 22. Forms and additional informa­tion is available from Marilyn McCall, assistant dean of student development. The AAUW scholarship fund is sup­ported primarily by a used book sale, to be held in late April at Hinds University Center. Contributions of used books, records, magazines and prints may be brought to the English department. FOURTH MATH CONTEST SET FOR APRIL 25 Thirty-five western North Carolina schools will send a total of 438 students to the Fourth Annual High School Mathe­matics Contest on April 25. Dr. Robert R. Jones, director of the Division of Mathematics of the North Carolina State Department of Public In­struction, will address high school faculty members and present awards during a 1:30 p.m. ceremony in Hoey Auditorium. NEW FACULTY HOUSING AVAILABLE A new faculty apartment building above Camp Lab school has been completed. The building includes 1-, 2-, and 3-bed-room, all-electric, unfurnished apart­ments which rent for $120, $140, and $170 respectively. The units may be rented by faculty and staff members, graduate students, and April 12, 1974 married undergraduates. CALENDAR COMMITTEE TO CONDUCT POLL An ad hoc committee to consider alter­native academic calendars will be polling faculty members, staff, and students this week to determine their preferences for alternative calendars for the University. Calendars under consideration include the quarter, semester, early semester, trimester, and 4-1-4 systems. Students will be asked to express a preference during the SGA elections Apr. 18. Other members of the University com­munity will be polled separately. Cdmmittee chairman is Dr. Karl Nicholas, assistant professor of English. CHAMBER GROUP TO PERFORM HERE The Peabody Chamber Players, a group consisting of violin, viola, cello, and piano, will perform April 18 at 8:15 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium. The program includes Beethoven's Trio in C minor, the Quartet in E flat by Mozart, and Serenade in C Major by Dohnanyi. Admission is free to subscription se­ries members of the Lectures, Concerts and Exhibitions Committee, and $1 to others. FOOD SERVICE TRAINING SCHEDULED HERE A series of training classes for lunchroom managers in western North Car­olina schools will be held this spring on the campus. The sessions, scheduled for Apr. 19-20, Apr. 26-27, and May 4, will cover nutri­tion and menu planning, quantity cookery, sanitation and management. About 75 food service managers are expected to attend the sessions, planned in cooperation with the School of Home Economics at UNC-Greensboro. DRAWINGS ON DISPLAY FACULTY PATENT COMMITTEE ESTABLISHED Fifteen drawings by Hiram Williams, professor of art at the University of Florida, are being exhibited daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the art depart­ment in Carol Grotnes Belk Building. The drawings include Watergate-inspired fugures and drawings from Williams' "group" studies. UNIVERSITY NAMES PHYSICIAN'S ASSOCIATE Walter Braxton Pugh III has been ap­pointed physician's associate for the University Health Services. A graduate of the physician's assoc­iate program at Duke University, Pugh will work directly with Dr. Hugh A. Matthews, director of the university health services. SUMMER MUSIC CAMP SCHEDULED The WCU Summer Music Camp, a two-week session of intensive vocal and instru­mental exercises for 200 high school students, has been scheduled for June 16-29. Classes in band, chorus and general musicianship will be offered along with small ensemble and individual instruction by members of the WCU music faculty. Among the visiting faculty will be John Kinyon, composer and director of music education at the University of Miami. Now in its fourth year, the camp attracted young musicians from 12 states in 1973. LITERARY EDITORS TO SPEAK HERE The editors of "Georgia Review" and "South Carolina Review," Edward Krickel, Stephen Maloney, and William Koon, will conduct a panel discussion on contempor­ary letters April 18 at 8 p.m. in room 104 of Carol Grotnes Belk Building. Their appearance is sponsored by WCU's special Visiting Scholars Program, which will also sponsor visits by contemporary authors Edward Albee, Harry Crews, and Austin Wright in May. There will be no admission charge. Acting Chancellor Frank Brown has appointed a Faculty Patent Dommittee consisting of Dr. Aaron Hyatt (chair­man), Dr. Frederick Coyle, Doyle Dillard, Dr. Arnold Nielson, and Bill Scott. According to the policy of the Board of Governors, the committee will review all patent disclosures made by faculty and staff to resolve questions of inven­tion ownership that may arise. As chairman of the WCU group, Dr. Hyatt will serve as a member of the All- University Patent Committee of the Uni­versity of North Carolina. FACULTY-ADMINISTRATION SENATE TO MEET The Faculty-Administration Senate will meet April 17 at 3 p.m. in the Cherokee Room of Hinds University Cen­ter . "MAN OF LA MANCHA" RESERVATIONS ACCEPTED BEGINNING APRIL 17 Ticket sales for the WCU production of "Man of La Mancha" will begin April 17 in the Department of Speech and Theatre Arts. The hit broadway musical will be presented April 25-27 in Hoey Auditor­ium under the direction of Dr. Donald L. Loeffler, head of the Department of Speech and Theatre Arts. Musical director is Dr. Temple Smith, assistant professor of music. The orchestra will be conducted by Dr. M. E. Beaver, assistant professor of music. Curtain time for the elaborately costumed musical will be 7:30 p.m. Admission is 75 cents for WCU stu­dents, 50 cents for children, and $1.25 for adults. NEW "MISS CATAMOUNT" CROWNED Deborah Ann Buchanan, head majorette of the WCU Marching Band, was crowned "Miss Catamount" for 1974 following final competition in the annual beauty pageant Wednesday night. Runners-up included Linda Christo­pher, Karen Furno, Mindy Kaye Sloop, and Dona Karen Williams. Pamela Mund-henke was named "Miss Congeniality." Western Carolina University FACULTY-STAFF NEWSLETTER April 19, 1974 "MAN OF LA MANCHA" TO OPEN HERE The Broadway hit musical "Man of La Mancha" will be presented April 25-27 at 7:30 p.m. in Hoey Auditorium. The elaborately costumed musical is based on Cervantes1 classic 16th century Spanish novel "Don Quixote." It was written by Dale Wasserman, and features music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion. The WCU production is directed by Dr. Donald L. Loeffler, head of the Depart­ment of Speech and Theatre Arts. Music director is Dr. Temple Smith, and the conductor is Dr. M. E. Beaver, both of the Department of Music. Reservations are now being accepted by the speech and theatre arts depart­ment, extension 491. Admission is 75 cents for WCU and high school students, 50 cents for children, and $1.25 for adults. FILM COLLOQUIUM TO FEATURE FILMMAKERS The Second Annual WCU Film Colloquium will be held here April 29 through May 2 under the sponsorship of the Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions Committee. Taking "The Filmmaker" as its theme, the colloquium will include programs by Stan VanDerBeek, prize-winning filmmaker and currently film-artist-in-residence at the University of South Florida, and Mary Jane Coleman, founder-director of the Sinking Creek Film Celebration held annually in Nashville, Tenn. VanDerBeek will show a sampling of his films Apr. 29 at 8:15 p.m. in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center. At 9:30 p.m. the UC will sponsor a re­ception in his honor. At 10 a.m. Apr. 30 VanDerBeek will demonstrate the use of computer graphics in the filmmaking process at the Comput­er Center in Forsyth School of Business Building. The demonstration will be followed by a screening of some of his computer-assisted films in Forsyth Auditorium. Mrs. Coleman will show samples of last year's winners from the Sinking Creek Film Celebration from 3 to 5 p.m. Apr. 30 in Forsyth Auditorium. The colloquium will include showings of Bergman's "The Seventh Seal," April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Forsyth Auditorium (sponsored by The Film Conspiracy), and Fellini's "8%," May 1 at 8:15 p.m. in the Grandroom. Also to be shown is "The Best of New Cinema," a collection of nine short films by such directors as Francois Truffaut, Richard Lester, and Roman Polanski. NIKKI GIOVANNI TO SPEAK Popular Black poet Nikki Giovanni will speak April 23 at 8:15 p.m. in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center. The author of several volumes of prose and poetry, Miss Giovanni also has recorded an album of her poetry called "Truth is On Its Way." Her appearance is sponsored by the Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions Com­mittee. Admission is free to WCU stu­dents and LCE subscription series mem­bers, and $1 for others. ALEX LESUEUR SCHEDULES RECITAL Dr. Alex Lesueur, associate professor of music, will perform a recital of music for the flute Monday, Apr. 22 at 8:15 p.m. in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center. He will be accompanied by Dr. Richard Renfro, professor of music. ROLLO MAY VISIT POSTPONED Psychologist Rollo May, originally scheduled for an April 29 speaking engagement here, will appear the evening of May 13 instead. Scheduling problems forced the change in date, according to the Lectures, Con­certs, and Exhibitions Committee, which will sponsor May's talk. WOMAN NOVELIST TO BE DISCUSSED Ann Upton of Asheville will present a program honoring the centennial of the birth of Ellen Glasgow, American novel­ist, April 22 at 7 p.m. in room 104 of Carol Grotnes Belk Building. Students under the direction of Kathy Carr, instructor in speech and theatre arts, will present readings from Glasgow's novels as part of the program. Admission will be free. PDK TO INITIATE FIRST WOMAN The WCU chapter of Phi Delta Kappa will break a tradition next week with the initiation of its first female mem­ber since the professional education fraternity was chartered here in 1967. Mrs. Anita Lynn Sellars of Canton, principal of East Waynesville Elementary School, will be among the new inductees in the previously all-male organization during an anniversary and awards pro­gram Saturday, April 27, at 5 p.m. in Dodson Cafeteria. Principal speaker for the program will be Culver Dale of Canton, director of the Western Regional Service Center. SUPREME COURT CANDIDATE TO SPEAK HERE Judge Elreta Melton Alexander of the 18th District Court will discuss "The Legal Status of Women" at 7 p.m. April 29 in room 104 of Carol Grotnes Belk Building. A candidate for chief justice of the N. C. Supreme Court subject to the May 7 primary, Judge Alexander will appear in conjunction with the women's studies course. Judge Alexander was the first Black woman to graduate from the law school at Columbia University and the first to practice law in North Carolina. Judge Alexander received the Dolly Madison award for contributions to women in the Greensboro area in 1969, and has been cited for dedication and service to law by the Business and Professional Men's Club of Greensboro. A former senior partner in the Greens­boro law firm of Alston, Alexander, Pell and Pell, she was elected a district court judge in 1968 and re-elected for a four-year term in 1972. The program here will be open to the public. WLOS-TV TO FEATURE EDC DISCUSSION Representatives of the University's Economic Development Center will con­duct a round-table discussion of land use and its relationship to development of the Appalachian region April 28 at 10:30 p.m. on WLOS-TV (channel 13). The program is an outcome of a grant to the EDC's Land Use Project by the Appalachian Consortium. UNIVERSITY TO HOST VISITING SCHOLARS Three visiting scholars will be on campus this week as part of the Univer­sity's Visiting Scholars Program. Dr. Frank Walton, associate director of the counseling center at the Univer­sity of South Carolina, will meet with faculty members and students in the School of Education and Psychology Apr. 22 through 24. An expert on early infantile autism, Dr. Ivar Lovaas, will speak on "Behav­ior Modification with Psychotic Chil­dren" Thursday, Apr. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Killian 104. Dr. Lovaas was interviewed in the January issue of "Psychology Today." One of his most controversial treatment techniques includes the use of electric shock to eliminate self-destructive be­havior and to build social behavior in autistic children. Dr. Peter Boyd-Bowman, a pioneer in the self-instructional approach to the teaching of languages not usually of­fered in the university curriculum, will speak Thursday, Apr. 25 at 8 p.m. in Belk Auditorium. The title of his talk will be "Self-Instructional Ap­proach to Teaching Non-Western Lan-gauges." Dr. Boyd-Bowman, a linguist at the Buffalo campus of the State University of New York, will speak again April 26 at 8 p.m. in Forsyth Auditorium. His topic for the second address will be "The Spanish Inquisition: Fact and Fic­tion." Admission is free to all programs of the Visiting Scholars Program. Western Carolina University reporter FACULTY-STAFF NEWSLETTER April 26, 1974 15 FACULTY RESEARCH PROJECTS FUNDED BY OFFICE FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS Grants totalling nearly $10,000 have been awarded by the Office for Academic Affairs to support 15 research projects by WCU faculty members, it has been an­nounced by Dr. J. Stuart Wilson, vice chancellor for academic affairs. The projects include studies of the water quality of the nearby Tuckaseigee River; analysis of ceramic artifacts from ancient Cherokee Indian villages, including some 30,000 items recovered last year by a WCU field team in Clay County; efforts to assist low-income families meet the economic crunch; work that may lead to further cancer research; psychological research; and research leading to scholarly publications in the fields of history and English. The research support program is being administered through the Graduate School under the deanship of Dr. M. B. Miorrill. The Tuckaseigee River studies, being undertaken by Dr. Jerry West in the De­partment of Biologyf will extend over a year from East LaPorte in Jackson County to Bryson City in Swain.
