Cooper of Cherokee and Carl Wilson, Jr., of Brevard have been named to the board of trustees at Western by the UNC Board of Governors. Two other trustees, Frank H. Watson of Spruce Pine and Richard A. Wood, Jr., of Asheville, were reappointed to the WCU board by the state body. All were appointed to four-year terms ef­fective July 1. Cooper is a prominent Cherokee businessman and owner of the Cherokee Holiday Inn and Best Western-Great Smokies Inn. He is a 1947 graduate of Swain County High School and attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a degree in administrative education. He served as a junior high school principal in Langlois, Ore., for three years before returning to North Carolina in 1959 as con­troller and office manager for Clement Brothers Company in Hickory. In 1973, Cooper formed a partnership with his brother, Candler R. Cooper, and built the Cherokee Holiday Inn. In 1982, Cooper, his brother, Candler, and his sister, Jessie C. Clement, built the 112-room Great Smokies Inn. Cooper is active in the Boy Scouts of America, Cherokee area travel and promo­tion, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He also has served on the Governor's task force studying problems between the federal, state, and Cherokee tribal governments, and on the N.C. 2000 Committee. He is a member of the Cherokee Kiwanis Club and Cherokee Chamber of Commerce• Cooper and his wife, the former Janene Moyle of Alpine, Utah, have six children— Debra of Denver, Colo., and Susan, Laura, David, Janene, and Jonathan, all of Cherokee. Wilson is employed by Olin Corporation in Brevard, in the quality control division. He is a native of Columbus, Ga., and attended Talladega College in Talladega, Ala., Cecil'8 Junior College in Asheville, and Fall's College in Atlanta. Quite interested in music, Wilson has served three terms as president of the Transylvania Choral Society and is former choirmaster at St. Philips Episcopal Church in Brevard. He also is active as an actor and director in the Brevard Little Theatre and is a n occasional poet and singer. Wilson is a co-founder of the North Carolina Day Care Association. He and his wife, the former Agnes Lynch, have two daughters, Carla Marie and V. Selina. Mrs. Wilson is employed in the Transylvania school system. Cooper and Wilson fill vacancies on the WCU board created by the departure of John Gloyne of Cherokee and Roy Patterson of Lenoir. Both Gloyne and Patterson had served two consecutive four-year terms, the maximum allowed under the UNC code for in­stitutional trustees. Watson was appointed by the Board of Governors in 1979. Wood, former mayor of Asheville, was appointed in 1981 to fill the unexpired term of John E. Coli, presi­dent of American Enka Corporation. Western's 13 trustees include eight appoint­ed by the UNC Board of Governors and four by the governor, plus the SGA president, who serves ex officio and does not vote. MHC RECEIVES GRANT FOR ARTS WORKSHOP -2- HARRISON RETURNS FROM CHINESE EXCHANGE The Mountain Heritage Center of WCU has won a $10,900 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts/Folk Arts Program to conduct a two-day workshop on the folk arts of Southern Appalachia and Irish-Americans. The public workshop will be held Aug. 26-27 in conjunction with the opening of a major new exhibit, "The Migration of the Scotch- Irish People," funded by the National Endow­ment for the Humanities. Both days will feature afternoon perfor­mances of music and dance, a lecture on the musical traditions of Northern Ireland, and demonstrations of Irish roof thatching and Appalachian shingling. A free concert of Irish and Appalachian music and dancing will be held the evening of Aug. 26. The list of performers includes an Irish piper and other Irish-tradition fiddlers, singers, and stepdancers from Chicago, Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. With them on stage will be traditional musicians and dancers from western North Carolina. The folk traditions of these two groups are different, but they are bound by common roots, said MHC folklorist Michael Ann Williams. Appalachian music and dance, she explained, is derived partially from tradi­tions brought to the region in the 18th cen­tury by the Scotch-Irish—Scots who moved to northern Ireland and, in this case, even­tually migrated to America. Irish-American traditions, on the other hand, descended from native Irish people who came to America a century or two later and settled in large urban areas, she said. One Irish-born performer who will be at the workshop is Mich Moloney of Philadelphia. One of the leading authorities on tradition­al Irish music in the U.S., he will be a workshop consultant and singer. Another consultant, performer, and lecturer will be David Hammond of the BBC in Belfast, who will speak on the musical traditions of Northern Ireland, the geographical link between Irish and American music. Peter Slevin, a northern Irish roof thatch-er now residing in Massachusetts and be­lieved to be the only full-time thatcher in this country, will thatch the Ulster stone hut in the MHC, and Cullowhee's R.O. Wilson will put the final touches on the shingle roof of the log cabin he has built there. In May, WCU's biology department head Rick Harrison returned from southwest China full of stories about new experiences. His trip was the first foray from Western in an exchange program initiated in 1981 when the Chancellor met the president of Yunnan University at an AASCU meeting in Colorado. Two Yunnan biology professors came to WCU last fall for two months, and future visits are planned on both sides. In the coming months, a Chinese plant taxon-omist and a cytologist will visit Western, working primarily at the Highlands Biologi­cal Station, and in September Chancellor H.F. Robinson and Vice Chancellor Robert Stoltz will go to China to meet with admin­istrators of Yunnan University to work out details of further interchanges. According to Ellerd Hulbert, director of in­ternational instructional programs for WCU, both institutions are prepared to expand be­yond biology in the interchange. The Chinese are especially interested in having visiting professors in the humanities— languages, literature, art, history, comput­er science. Economics and business also are possibilities. Dr. Harrison said that a big need of the Chinese is for people to teach English. They are now limited in having few profes­sors who could speak English if sent to WCU, although many of them read it. They do have sufficient people to translate there for Western professors. Besides paving the way for further institu­tional exchanges, Dr. Harrison lectured on sponge biology, did research on Chinese agriculture and tobacco production, and sur­veyed for sponges. He collected sponges in the remote Li Jiang, a village about 150 miles from Tibet, where musicians led him in a folk dance. His airfare was paid by part of a $6,500 grant from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Interna­tional, Inc. The company announced in late June that it is the first U.S. cigarette maker to be invited to join two Chinese firms to produce and market a new cigarette in China. Dr. Harrison describes the trip as one of the greatest experiences of his life—but he was glad to return to normality anyway. -3- TENDER COMEDY TO BE THEATRE OFFERING ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH APPOINTS ADVISORS Jan de Hartog's The Fourposter is the next Little Theatre offering. The speech and theatre arts production brings moments of fear, pathos, and unconscious comedy revolving around the 35-year-old marriage of Michael and Agne s. The Fourposter opens Tuesday, July 5, for a three-day run. Curtain time is 8 p.m. The story begins in 1920 and concludes in the mid-'SOs. The couple's entire relationship is out­lined: their awkward wedding night, the joys and fears of childbirth, the frustra­tion of a struggling writer, the temptation of outside romance, the trials of children with their growing pains, the agony of the empty nest, and the s atisfaction of growing older together. Cast in the leading roles are Kathryn Couch as Agnes and James A. Utt as Michael. Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and students, and $2 for children. SPEECH AND THEATRE ARTS HOLDS REUNION The speech and theatre arts department held a reunion for former STA graduates and majors over the Memorial Day weekend. It began Saturday afternoon with a welcom­ing party hosted by Donald L. Loeffler at his home on Kitchens Branch Road. Following on Sunday was an afternoon picnic and cookout, with Kathleen Sandquist-Wright as hostess at her home in Forest Hills. Approximately 65 people attended, including 25 STA graduates. Some graduates attending were Karen Furno of Dallas, Tex.; Ricky Triplett, purchasing agent with E. Systems, Alexandria, Va.; Tyson Stephenson and Steve Carlisle of New York; Andrea Brack, personnel director of Fontana Village Resort in Fontana, N.C.; Jessica Phelps of Alliance Theatre in Atlanta; Sammi Gray of San Francisco State University; Dennis West of Nashville, Tenn.; Janus Yates of New York City; David Hearst of Detroit, Mich.; and Bobby Funk of Nebraska. Western has established a new 14-member advisory committee for its environmental health program. Committee members include environmental health professionals from North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. They are charged with evaluating the WCU program and recom­mending curriculum changes that will make the undergraduate program more responsive to the environmental health needs of indus­try and government. Meeting each spring and fall, they also will help graduates locate jobs and make recommendations involving student intern­ships, major purchases, and needed facilities. Program director Joe Beck said the commit­tee was formed in part to satisfy accredita­tion requirements set by the National Environmental Health Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula. He said the program, offered by the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, will seek accreditation next year. The chairman of the committee, elected by members, is David Simpson, director of the Macon County Health Department. Randall Turpin, director of the Jackson County Health Department, is the secretary. Other members are: Daryl E. Rowe, director of the public safe­ty division at the University of Georgia; Susan Grayson, quality assurance officer for Disney World; Jack Stanley, director of home study for the Center for Disease Con­trol in Atlanta; William Broadway, a regis­tered sanitarian in Asheville; Owen Setzer, environmental engineer for the Western Regional Office in Black Mountain; Dan McCracken, director of environmental health at the Haywood County Health Department. Also Edward Morton, director of the Madison County Health Department; Jack McGinnis, di­rector of the Transylvania County Health Department; James B. Tenney, director of the Buncombe County Health Department; R.D. Childers, Jr., director of the Swain County Health Department; Stacy Covil, head of san­itation for the state Department of Human Resources; and Larry Coon, regional quality assurance manager for Red Lobster Inc. in College Park, Ga. -4- NAMES IN THE NEWS HAL SALISBURY (director, Continuing Educa­tion) was recently chosen president-elect of the Association for Continuing Profes­sional Education, He will become president in 1984. Dr. Salisbury recently attended an intensive course on "Training the Train­er" offered by the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt. It was designed to enhance the skills of those responsible for corporate training programs in business and industry. LEONARD SCHAIPER (Human Services) was re­cently elected vice-president of the N.C. Council for Children with Behavior Disor­ders. The statewide group is concerned with the education of emotionally handi­capped children and youth. Schaiper is project director of a U.S. Department of Education grant to train special education teachers of the emotionally handicapped. In addition, he is investigating learning styles of youths and adults. LARRY STUCKI (Anthropology) has received a $2,700 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to attend an NEH summer seminar at Harvard University. To be con­ducted at the Harvard Center for Middle Eastern Studies, the seminar will examine ethnic and religious minorities in the Middle East and Central Asia. EVAN FIRESTONE (head, Art) has been appoint­ed chairman of the department of art and de­sign at Iowa State University in Ames. His appointment was approved at a recent meet­ing of the Iowa State Board of Regents. JOSEPH R. SCAGNOLI (Music) has received the outstanding alumnus award from Ball State University School of Music, where he re­ceived his bachelor's and master's degrees. This summer he is directing the All Ameri­can College Band at Epcot Center of Disney World. JOHN BELL (History; associate dean, Arts and Sciences) was appointed to a five-year term as a member of the Advisory Editorial Committee of the North Carolina Division of Archives and History. On May 26 he attend­ed a meeting of the Executive Committee of the N.C. Literary and Historical Associa­tion in Raleigh. JEFFREY SAUER (Library) has been appointed as Advertising Manager for the N.C. Library Association's periodical entitled North Carolina Libraries. DON LOEFFLER (head, Speech and Theatre Arts) attended the executive officers meet­ing of the American College Theatre Festi­val, the University and College Theatre As­sociation, and the American Theatre Associa­tion. WORKSHOP TO HELP PARENTS OF THE GIFTED When parents discover that their child is gifted, they tend to be both pleased and scared—glad that their child is bright but afraid he or she may become a maladjusted egghead with thick glasses and few friends. So says Judith Stillion, WCU psychology pro­fessor who directs "The Cullowhee Experi­ence" for gifted children, now in its 26th year, and who is one of several profession­als slated to address a summer workshop on "Parenting and Teaching the Gifted." How parents and schools can work together to help gifted children succeed, how par­ents can become advocates for their chil­dren's education, and how gifted programs can be integrated into the total school pro­gram are questions that will be addressed during the workshop July 12-14. Speakers include Jo Ann Carland, a special­ist in gift ed education; Russell French, professor of curriculum and instruction at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville; and WCU faculty members Gurney Chambers, Milford Clark, and Ed Kesgen. Dr. Chambers will give the keynote address, and Dr. Kesgen will talk on outdoor education for the gifted. The A Weekly Newsletter for the Faculty and Staff of Western Carolina University Cullowhee, North Carolina July 8, 1983 EIGHT RECEIVE TENURE The University of North Carolina Board of Governors has approved the award of perma­nent tenure to eight Western Carolina University faculty members, according to an announcement by Chancellor H.F. Robinson. Approved for tenure, effective with the be­ginning of the 1983-84 academic year, are John Russell Adams, Mason Gene Bailey, Robert Lewis Dalley, John Richard Gentry, Steven Robert Gold, William Joseph Kirwan, Max Moise Schreiber, and John Alexander Wade III. Drs. Adams, Bailey, Schreiber, and Wade are members of the School of Business faculty. Dr. Adams is an associate professor of man­agement, Dr. Bailey of computer information systems. Drs. Schreiber and Wade are assis­tant professors of economics, and the lat­ter directs graduate programs in business. Drs. Gentry and Gold teach in the School of Education and Psychology. Dr. Gentry, an assistant professor of education, directs the WCU Reading Center. Dr. Gold is an associate professor of psychology. Dalley is assistant professor of industrial education and technology in the School of Technology and Applied Science, and Kirwan is the university librarian. ANDERSON AND LEWIS COMPLETE COLLECTION After five years of research, two WCU his­tory professors have compiled five centur­ies1 worth of Cherokee Indian documents pre­viously scattered in the archives of six foreign countries. Their work, which includes a 751-page ref­erence book titled A Guide to Cherokee Documents in Foreign Archives, has spot­lighted the Cherokee as the first native American tribe to possess such a complete collection of foreign documents on their history and culture. At 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 14, the two, William L. Anderson and James W. Lewis, will present a microfilmed copy of the near­ly 10,00 0 documents to the Mu seum of the Cherokee Indian in Cherokee. Two other copies will remain in the a rchives of Hunter Library—one available to the public and one kept in a vault so that replace­ments may be made as necessary. "We're really looking forward to receiving this collection," said Maxine Hill, general manager of the Cherokee museum. "We think it will give us a much better account of what was happening, and we hope to get a lot more researchers. "It's generated quite a lot of e xcitement at other Indian museums," she added, noting other tribes hope to do similar research. The collected documents were written since the early 16th century and housed, often ob­scurely, in the archives of Mexico, Spain, Canada, England, Scotland, and France. Most of the documents were written during colonial times when foreign countries court­ed the support of Indians. They include letters, diplomatic reports, journals, dia­ries, census records, and narratives writ­ten by Indian captives. The two professors received $156,148 in grants from the NEH and matching funds from WCU to collect and copy the documents and prepare an accompanying guide. They began their research in 1978. Jim Lloyd, archivist at WCU, said the col­lection is so unique that "people working -2- 011 Cherokee history will have to refer to it. It is something that no one else has." The collection includes foreign materials that few scholars have ever consulted or, in some cases, even knew existed, the re­searchers said. In addition to documents on the Cherokee, the collection includes numerous references to about 100 other tribes. "It opens a whole new field of information on American Indians," Dr. Lewis said. "Some scholars assume that you should be able to find information on American Indians in the United States. But that's not true. The fact is, certainly in the early history, there is more information abroad than there is here." He said the documents shed new light on such subjects as the land the C herokee occu­pied, their reactions to foreigners, and some of their early leaders. "The idea that the Cherokee were just a passive group that let history overwhelm them is not true," he added. "It is clear from our research that the Cherokee were quite active and were very sophisticated in dealing with the outside world. We have .accounts of them traveling to London, the Caribbean, Canada, and Mexico." In the collection guide, published as Volume 4 of the Native American Bibliog­raphy Series by Scarecrow Press, Drs. Anderson and Lewis have written a 35-page subject-name index that notes the senders and recipients of letters, the geographical origin of letters sent from Cherokee terri­tory, and all proper nouns found in the doc­uments. Indexed under the heading "Cherokee" are subjects such as education, hostilities, customs, character traits, boundaries, treaties, missionaries, and language. Though the most comprehensive of its kind, the collection does not include all foreign materials on the Cherokee. The historians said they probably overlooked some docu­ments and could not do research in the ar­chives of Italy, Germany, Russia, and Cuba. Drs. Anderson and Lewis also said they could not include many maps in this collec­tion but plan to write a sequel that will list and duplicate most of the maps they have discovered. STA CHOICE HAS UNIVERSAL APPEAL Next in the summer series of plays presented by the department of speech and theatre arts is Home, opening Tuesday, July 12, for a three-night run. It has been described by New York critics as a bountiful harvest rich in local language and home-hewn poetry, blending lyricism with the rhythms of the back streets. The playwright, Samm-Art Williams, demon­strates the debilitating effects of disloca­tion in his story of a young black Everyman who leaves his North Carolina farm to mi­grate North and to return home again. The hero is a prodigal son who travels in the same boots worn by countless wanderer he­roes of traditional legend and folk tales, and the play has a universal appeal. Accord­ing to The New York Times, "One would have to be a misanthrope not to be charmed by Home." Three actors—David Roberts playing Cephus Miles, Tavia Stowe playing Woman One, and
