NOTEWORTHY NEWS Annual Cullowhee canoe race raises money for river park study The fourth annual Cullowhee Canoe Slalom held Sept. 8 on the Tuckaseigee River in Cullowhee raised a little more than $400 to help fund a river park feasibility study. Race coordinator Maurice Phipps, professor of parks and recreation management in the WCU Department of Human Services, called the event a success. “It was a nice mix of community, families and students,” Phipps said. SEARCH Search Home About Archives Subscribe Contact WCU Home September 11, 2012 Email This Post Print This Post Share | NOTEWORTHY NEWS Anthropology and sociology speaker series starts Sept. 26 The Western Carolina University Department of Anthropology and Sociology Brownbag Series resumes on Wednesday, Sept. 26, with a presentation by Cherokee language faculty members. The lunchtime series, which is free and open to the public, is an opportunity for faculty and students associated with the department to share research and ideas with the community. Kicking off the series will be Hartwell Francis, Cherokee language program director, and Tom Belt, coordinator of the Cherokee language program, presenting “The Role of Higher Education in Maintaining Biolinguistic Diversity.” Francis and Belt will explore how languages and biospheres are succumbing to global pressures and the role of the university in fostering cultural and biological pluralism. Then, on Wednesday, Oct. 10, Nikki Jastremski, lecturer in forensic anthropology, will present “Investigating Biological Ancestry and Social Identity in Colonial Cuenca, Ecuador.” Jastremski will detail research designed to estimate the biological ancestry of commingled individuals in a recently discovered ossuary under the city’s cathedral. The series will conclude for the fall with a presentation Wednesday, Nov. 14. Philip E. Coyle, professor of anthropology, will discuss “Community Gardening as Intensive, Sustainable Agriculture: The Sylva Community Garden in Comparative Perspective.” Coyle will compare the Sylva Community Garden with an Robert Netting’s intensive, sustainable agricultural type. Blackboard is a learning management system with the ability to disseminate course materials, host virtual class meetings and collaborative course discussions, handle assignment submissions and manage assessments. Blackboard Day participants are invited to drop by Technology Commons on the ground oor of Hunter Library between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. for short, face-to-face training sessions. A cash award and a bronze medallion created especially for the award are given to 17 recipients, one from each institution, at an annual recognition luncheon hosted by the Board of Governors in the spring. By creating and funding this award, the Board of Governors has made a strong statement and commitment to recognize and reward sustained excellence in teaching here at Western Carolina University. Presenters from Western North Carolina institutions and organizations will showcase best practices for work with young people. The main presenter will be Billy Jonas, a singer, songwriter and teacher who will discuss how music can be used to creatively teach, set the tone, inspire and manage the classroom. Breakout sessions will cover topics such as positive behavior intervention support, teaching with puppets, adolescent self-harm and supporting homeless students. Registration is $35 through Sept. 20, $25 for students and retirees, and $45 on the day of the event. For three days in September, the rst-ever Dada Festival at Western Carolina University brings together music, dance, the visual arts and lectures on topics literary, artistic and film-related in the spirit of the early 20th-century art movement known as Dadaism. All festival events are free, and the public is invited. Sponsored by the WCU College of Fine and Performing Arts, with collaboration from the Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Dada Festival is a celebration of the art – and anti-art – of the early 20th century. Dadaism grew from the aftermath of World War I, which fostered a period of disillusionment with the conventions of society that spread to the arts. A rejection of beauty characterized the movement, which ushered in the age of surrealism. “The spirit of Dada is reected in acts of spontaneity, absurdity, natural impulse and futility and is an attitude that is still inuencing contemporary art today,” said Bruce Frazier, WCU Carol Grotnes Belk Endowed Professor of Commercial and Electronic Music and an event organizer. Robert Kehrberg, dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts, proposed the idea as a unifying concept around which the dierent branches of the arts could gather around. “I wanted to do this and get faculty together on a joint project because I thought we’d have a lot of fun,” said Kehrberg, noting that the movement crossed boundaries after its genesis in Zurich to places including Berlin, Paris and New York. He hopes WCU students gain an understanding of how “there are movements that have huge effects on art,” including social and economic connections. Dada Festival events are: – A lecture by visiting scholar Suzanne Churchill, 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in Room 130 of the John W. Bardo Fine and Performing Arts Center With “Pas de deux: Mina Loy and Alfred Stieglitz Dance Dada,” Churchill, a professor of English at Davidson College, looks at the “curious convergence” of Mina Loy and Alfred Stieglitz in a 1917 experimental literary magazine. Her work examines a flippant collage of gossipy snippets by Loy followed by an earnest letter from Stieglitz calling for anonymous submissions to an art exhibit. According to Churchill, her talk “presents an entrée analyzing Loy’s and Stieglitz’s juxtaposition in [the magazine] Blind Man, an adagio illuminating the common ground between them, two variations tracing each artist’s involvement with New York Dada, and a coda, explaining how their common attraction to Dada complicates current conceptions of modernism and the avant-garde.” – Dada chamber music concert, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the Coulter Building recital hall P. Bradley Ulrich, professor of trumpet, and Jake Waldrop, a senior studying commercial and electronic music, will open the concert with a trumpet duet by French composer and pianist Erik Satie. Piano professors Bradley Martin and Andrew Adams will play a four-hands piano sonata by Francis Poulenc, a member of a group of composers known as “Les Six.” Adams also will perform L’Album Des Six, a suite of six movements each composed by a member of Les Six. Also featured: Will Peebles, director of the School of Music, performing “Bass Nightingale” by Erwin Schulho on contrabassoon; ute professor Eldred Spell performing “Density 21.5” by Edgard Varese; a work for solo clarinet by John Cage comprising “chance elements” and performed by professor Shannon Thompson; selected works for ute and piano by Charles Koechlin, performed by Spell and faculty member Christina Reitz on piano; and original work from Frazier performed on the electronic wind instrument. Set to screen is “data,” a short, digital animation movie by Mary Anna LaFratta, faculty member in the School of Art and Design. MORE THAN A CONTINENT Anna Vallye A Sept. 20 reception and talk with artist Carrie Ann Baade, whose work includes the surrealistic ‘Buttery Lovers’ (oil on panel, 2011), is one in a series of events comprising Western Carolina University’s Dada Festival. Vallye, curatorial fellow at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will lecture on “Games of the Unexpected: Fernand Léger and Dada Spectacle in Paris.” The talk will focus on the painter Léger’s collaborations with the Dadaists in Paris between the rst and second world wars, when Dada activities centered on the creation of public spectacles that showcased avant-garde plays, poetry readings, concerts, exhibitions and lms. A screening of one of the most famous of these films, Léger’s “Ballet Mecanique,” as well as other selected Dada shorts, will follow the lecture. – Reception and artist’s talk with Carrie Ann Baade, 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the WCU Fine Art Museum A series of 20 paintings from less than a foot square to 4- feet long, plus a large collage installation, “Since Midnight” by Baade explores political issues and is based in surrealism (a movement that emerged from Dadaism). Magical and imaginative, the works span from delightful to satirical to humorous and will remain on exhibit at the museum through Oct. 19. – Dada orchestra concert and ballet, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, in the Bardo Arts Center Under the direction of Frazier, the WCU Artist-in-Residence Orchestra, comprising students and faculty from the WCU School of Music and members of the Asheville Symphony, will perform “Scaramouche” by Darius Milhaud, a three-movement piece featuring WCU saxophone professor Ian Jeress; two “Gymnopédies” compositions by Satie that are slow, simple, modal pieces orchestrated by French impressionist composer Claude Debussy; and “Pacic 231,” an orchestral tone poem by Arthur Honegger that uses the rhythms, brass and strings to portray the power and energy of a locomotive. The centerpiece of the evening is a performance of “Parade,” a one-act ballet by Satie featuring a magician, young girl and acrobats (and more vaudeville than concert hall) rst presented in Paris in 1917. Karyn Tomczak, director of the WCU dance program, will choreograph the dance; Susan Brown-Strauss, who along with Tomczak is a faculty member in the WCU School of Stage and Screen, designed the costumes in the spirit of cubist designs by Pablo Picasso, who designed the costumes and sets for the original production. This complements his clinical doctorate, a Doctor of Nursing Practice. As part of the graduation ceremonies, Collins was presented with the 2011-2012 Outstanding Dissertation Award from Andrews University. His dissertation, “The Emotional Intelligence Proles and Cognitive Measures of Nurse Anesthesia Students in the Southeastern United States,” looked at emotional intelligence scores of nurse anesthesia students at three junctions in their programs: at the beginning, at one year and at completion. The purpose of Collins’ study was to establish a baseline of understanding as a potential metric to serve as a guide in future studies about both admission to a nurse anesthesia program and emotional intelligence programming for nurse anesthetists in these intensive training programs. TOP STORIES Community asked to support Cullowhee lily initiative An eort to re-establish the Cullowhee lily on the Western Carolina University campus gets under way this fall with a fundraising drive, a bulb sale and ceremonial planting in the Centennial Garden. A white ower with six petals formally called the Zephyranthes atamasca, the Cullowhee lily once common at Western Carolina now grows in only a few spots on campus. Some speculate the water-loving plant began to disappear from the Cullowhee region when the low valley wetlands were drained rst for farm use then later during construction. The proliferation of aggressive kudzu along the river banks may have been another factor in the disappearance of this non-competitive lily. A committee of WCU alumni, staff and community members began meeting last spring out of a desire to bring the Cullowhee lily back and to do so in a way that also raises money for the WCU Alumni Scholarship Fund. “In cultivating the lily we are also cultivating our heritage and our students,” said Susan Belcher, wife of Chancellor David O. Belcher and a leader in the initiative. Supporters of the Cullowhee lily initiative who give a $50 donation toward planting and maintaining a lily bed on campus and supporting the WCU Alumni Scholarship Fund will be honored as charter members of the Cullowhee Lily Society. Those who donate $250 will receive a framed limited edition and numbered photo of the Cullowhee lily printed on canvas and signed by Chancellor David O. Belcher. The Cullowhee lily committee also will sell, while supplies last, a package of the hard-to-come-by bulbs for $10 to those interested in planting the Cullowhee lily, with proceeds supporting ongoing care for the plants at WCU and the WCU Alumni Scholarship Fund. The bulbs will be sold Sept. 29-Oct. 31 at businesses including Bryson Farm Supply and Country Road Farms Nursery & Garden Center in Sylva, Ray’s Florist & Greenhouse in Dillsboro and Tuckasegee Trading Co. in Cullowhee. In addition, bulbs will be available at Cullowhee lily information booths at WCU on Mountain Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 29; before the Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 6, and before the football game against Appalachian State on Saturday, Oct. 27. The rst bulbs to be planted on campus will be in the Centennial Garden, located near the curve in the road above the Central Plaza fountain. A ceremonial planting will be held Homecoming weekend at the garden at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Dr. Frances Owl-Smith, president-elect of the WCU Alumni Board of Directors, said she is particularly excited that the effort will support scholarships. “This cannot be more appreciated at this time of economic stress for our students in need of nancial support who want to receive their education at this fine university,” said Owl-Smith.
