Others believe the word Cullowhee is associated with a kind of white lily that was plentiful at the time of European settlement. Below, Western Carolina University’s Cherokee language program coordinator and instructor, Thomas N. Belt, shares his thoughts about the possible origin of the word “Cullowhee” in the Cherokee language. “First, many of the modern place names in the areas of traditional Cherokee lands are almost indecipherable to native speakers due to the Anglicization of these terms. It is essential, at times, to consider contextual evidence to arrive at a plausible denition for the terms in question. In this case and according to Cherokee legend, the Cullowhee area was referred to as the home of a giant whose responsibility was keeping vigilance over the animals and plants of the area before and during the emergence of the Cherokee people as a tribe. This entity’s name was, in the phonetic style of the Cherokee syllabary, Tsu-tla-ka-la. In a simpler phonetic form this would be pronounced “joolth-cullah.” The Cherokee will place a -wi, or –i locative marker, pronounced “wee” or “ee,” at the end of nouns denoting geographic place. This would have been done to the name of the giant’s home and the surrounding area. SEARCH Search Home About Archives Subscribe Contact WCU Home August 25, 2010 Email This Post Print This Post Share | Arledge Armenaki TOP STORIES Cinematography professor wins Telly Award for work on ‘Wesley’ movie Arledge Armenaki, Western Carolina University associate professor of cinematography, is recipient of a Telly Award for his work as director of photography on “Wesley,” a historical movie about a co-founder of the Methodist church. Armenaki won the bronze prize in the category of creative lighting, one of four Telly Awards given to the makers of “Wesley.” The motion picture, filmed in and around Winston-Salem and Morganton in 2007 and 2008, also received a silver award in the category of religion and spirituality production, and bronze awards in the categories of computer-generated imagery and special effects, and historical and biographical production. Now in their 31st year, the Telly Awards honor the best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, top video and film productions, and work created for the Web. Each category is judged by an independent panel of professionals in that area, and judged against a standard of excellence. Foundery Pictures’ John Jackman, director of “Wesley,” credited Armenaki with giving the movie an authentic look and feel. “I asked Arledge to create a classical, naturally-lit look like the Renaissance painter Caravaggio, and he succeeded beyond my expectations,” said Jackman. “He is a wonderful director of photography who really knows what he is doing.” While serving as director of photography on the movie, Armenaki also guided 16 WCU students in the motion picture and television production program who worked as crew. With his coaching, students served as a unit production manager, assistant directors, construction coordinators, set dressers, carpenters, boom operators, grips, camera assistants, wardrobe managers, office manager and script supervisor. As crew members, the students helped find, manage and build sets fitting for the 18th century and in line with the storybook feel that Armenaki and Jackman wanted to create. Some helped build a re-creation of a large sailing ship inside an old gymnasium, and a 50-by-20- foot blue screen, which required a lot of sewing and lighting, to hang behind it. Jack Sholder, director of WCU’s motion picture and television production program, said the “Wesley” project is an example of the type of valuable hands-on learning experience that students can have, working side-by-side with professionals from the industry. “Arledge Armenaki’s cinematography on ‘Wesley,’ collaborating with a mostly WCU student crew, is exemplary,” Sholder said. “This award confirms his status as one of the industry’s finest cinematographers.” WCU students and faculty also were cast in the movie. In addition to WCU alumnus and professional actor R. Keith Harris, performers with WCU ties in the film included faculty and students who were extras; Peter Savage, visiting lecturer of theater, and Terry Nienhuis, retired professor of English. As an award winner, Armenaki received a Telly Award statuette, which is made by the same firm that produces the Oscar and the Emmy awards. Other winners included programs by National Geographic, The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, NBC Universal, and other prominent network. CuRvE, a nonprot organization committed to revitalizing Cullowhee along the Tuckaseigee River and Old Cullowhee Road northeast of campus, approached the village, a small incorporated community southwest of campus, about the possibility of annexing some land into the village. The organization was facing signicant challenges such as qualifying for government grants and funding for CuRvE initiatives to assist business owners and residents – challenges that could be easier to overcome if part of an incorporated area, said Brian Railsback, a CuRvE member, Cullowhee area resident and dean of WCU’s Honors College. The organization’s vision includes expanding dining, shopping and entertainment venues; building paths that connect to WCU; and cultivating a river park for outdoor enthusiasts, all in a way that reects the mountain community’s history, culture and natural beauty. To gather regional information and statistics needed to answer questions from Forest Hills, CuRvE approached the university and was fortunate to begin working with Tom McClure, director of partnership development for the Millennial Initiative, said Railsback. As part of the process, CuRvE members learned more about the Town Center, one of the proposed neighborhoods of interest in WCU’s Millennial Initiative. The Town Center would offer a range of businesses and services on campus within a planned unit development to be developed on land adjacent to Ramsey Regional Activity Center and the Cordelia Camp Building, said Chancellor John W. Bardo. The project could benet if the site were part of an incorporated area such as Forest Hills, said Bardo. He introduced representatives from PBC+L Architects, whose presentation at the meeting included current photos of Cullowhee and campus along with images (examples below right) that oered a “look” and “feel” possible for the Town Center and campus corridor connecting it to Old Cullowhee Road. The proposal being discussed includes changing the name of the village from Forest Hills to Cullowhee. Village leaders and community members asked questions, including how development decisions would be made, the logistics of the process, and the pros and cons for village residents if the village were to annex the land. Jeanette Evans, owner of the Mad Batter Bakery and Café, and a representative from CuRvE, said that she lives near WCU and noted that annexing the land would enable the people of the community to have a stronger voice in decisions that guided how the area grew – decisions that could aect such things as light pollution. “That would be something I would want to protect in my community – the ability to see the stars at night,” said Evans. Jim Wallace, mayor of Forest Hills, said there was similar discussion when he moved to the community in 1962. “We were talking about the same things at that time, only we got nowhere,” said Wallace. “We are just updating. Maybe we will get somewhere.” The next Forest Hills meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the Jackson County Recreation Center. After consultation with the staff, the Office of the Provost, and the founder of the Center, Chancellor Emeritus Myron L. Coulter, the name has been changed to the Coulter Faculty Commons for Excellence in Teaching and Learning with the official announcement to be made at the CFC’s Faculty Welcome Luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 18. The CFC recently made the cover of the August issue of Campus Technology Magazine for its 2010 Innovation Award in the area of leadership, governance and policy. The term “commons” fits the model of the CFC, which has evolved into a support area for faculty that crosses the divisions of IT and academic affairs to provide a common area of integrated support for faculty. Staff in the Coulter Faculty Commons integrate technology support with pedagogical strategies for effective teaching. “The new name fits the mission of our work as well as the uniqueness of our organizational structure,” said Anna McFadden, director. Our spring survey results indicated that 78 percent of faculty responding indicated they had changed a practice as a result of contact with the Coulter Faculty Commons. The new schedule is as follows: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday The museum also is open one hour before each Galaxy of Stars Series performance at the Fine and Performing Arts Center, on selected Saturday “Family Art Days” and for other special events. The Kindles, from Amazon, are wireless devices that weigh less than a paperback but contain hundreds of books. Students, faculty and staff members may borrow the devices for three weeks. The e-book readers come preloaded with a virtual library that includes approximately 240 selections in contemporary ction and nonction, classics, mysteries and thrillers, romance, science fiction and fantasy, and even cookbooks. “The library hopes to encourage reading by providing e-books on e-readers to anyone who may enjoy reading by using a format that provides access to multiple books at one time, and that even allows the reader to control the size of the font,” said Elisabeth Leonard, associate dean of library services. The Kindles come with a carrying case, charger and instructions. Library personnel encourage borrowers to fill out an optional survey form, also included. To nd out if a Kindle is available for checkout, go to library.wcu.edu, click on “Classic Catalog,” and do a keyword search for “Kindle device.” The device is available for checkout at the circulation desk. Patrons can put holds on the devices using their online library accounts. NOTEWORTHY NEWS IT rolls out DoIT.wcu.edu, support changes After months of planning and behind-the-scenes work, the Division of Information Technology, or DoIT, launched its new website, DoIT.wcu.edu, in early August. DoIT.wcu.edu provides WCU students, faculty, sta, families and guests with a main point of entry to IT services and help. Visitors to the site will nd information on IT services, including how to access those services, as well as information on how to get help. Alerts, news and events are displayed on the homepage, which features a system status monitor, weekly updates and upcoming training opportunities. A prominent feature of the site is the “audience gateways,” which bring together the most requested or sought after IT information and resources for students; faculty and staff; and families and guests. The site reflects recent changes to the division’s support services: Formerly known as the IT Services Help Desk, the IT Help Desk provides support by phone (227-7487 and 866-928-7487 toll free), e-mail (ithelp@wcu.edu) and online (ithelp.wcu.edu) New to campus, the Technology Commons is the place for WCU students, faculty and staff to receive assistance and support in person. Located on the ground floor of Hunter Library, the Technology Commons offers, among other services, a walk-up counter for help, hardware support and student computing.
