In January 1900, the Appalachian National Park Association submitted a Memorial to Congress and, on May 25, 1900, a bill passed authorizing funds to investigate the possibility of a national park. The printed Memorial enumerated the reasons to establish a national park in the southeastern U.S. Formed in 1899, the Association was a multi-state effort with representatives from six southern states. Although the organization had major successes early on, their efforts met with resistance and the organization disbanded in 1905
