Before the establishment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, small farms inhabited the mountains. This photograph is of the children of the McCarter family of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Although hundreds of family farms were located in the park, more than half the land that became the park was owned by logging companies. This photograph, along with others, were donated to the park by Mary Clements Decker and John Hazard Decker
