This paper describes recent developments in the Bulgarian labor market, including associated changes in the institutional framework. Profound changes are under way, including the emergence of rapidly rising unemployment, a constant or declining working population, widening of wage differentials and falling real wages. Many of these trends point to greater labor market flexibility. The broad scope of institutional change in Bulgaria is also reflected in a radical transformation of the labor relations system and reforms in the social safety net
