This photograph was taken at the 1948 Craftsman's Fair of the Southern Highlands while it was held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The photograph shows potter Charlotte Welch Bigmeat (1887-1959) while she is demonstrating at the fair. Bigmeat is shaping and smoothing the exterior of a handbuilt pot. On the table in front of her are two wedding vases and a carved Indian head. Bigmeat wears a nametag that reads “Cherokee School Pottery.” Charlotte Bigmeat was mother to five daughters, all of whom made pottery: Tinie Bigmeat Thompson (1913-1999), Ethel Bigmeat Queen (1916-1942), Elizabeth Bigmeat Jackson (1919-2008), Mabel Bigmeat Swimmer (1925-1991), and Louise Bigmeat Maney (1932-2001)
