This mule head bookend was carved out of walnut by Wahdih “Watty” Chiltoskie (1897-1973) in the 1930s or 1940s. Chiltoskie was the older brother of woodcarver Goingback Chiltoskey (1907-2000) and lived on the Qualla Boundary Cherokee Reservation. He sold his carvings through various regional shops such as the Southern Highland Craft Guild's Allanstand shop and the Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual cooperative. Note that Watty's last name is sometimes spelled Chiltosky or Chiltoskey
