This five-back rocking chair was made by Shadrach Birdic "Birdie" Mace, 1892-1973, of Madison County, North Carolina. This ladder-back rocker is maple with a rush seat and was made to order. Light lines are marked on the up-rights to show where slats and rungs are to be placed. While this particular chair was made in 1962, it is typical of the chairs made by Mace and his family in the early 20th century. Mace, a third generation chair-maker, usually signed his name S.B. Mace, and was also known as Shadrick Mace, Birdie Mace, and Birdic Mace
