These items were contained in a tool chest belonging to woodworker Jesse Bryson Stalcup. This brace, known as a "Lightning Brace" in the 1895 edition of the Montgomery Ward catalogue, is used for drilling holes and screwing bolts. It was found in the Jesse Bryson Stalcup tool chest with a screwdriver bit in its chuck. The extra bits are stamped "W. M. Johnson Newark N.J." Stalcup was a skilled carpenter, millwright, and woodworker who worked in and around Waynesville, N.C., Macon County, N.C., and Hiawassee, Ga., circa 1880s-1930.
