Firs t and foremost a person who has had experience in removing fore1gn bodies from the eye will warn the pa ient of the danger of rubbing the eye- tl)e pobsrbiliry of injlJry to the eyeball. Then he' ll have the patien t close th.e e::e gcn tly in the hope that the tears may wash the speck out or bring it into view so that it can be removed. He may use a medi~i ne d ropper to w:asb the eye o~t: using dean ""ater or boric acid solution. Or he may take hold of the upper eyelashes and pull the upper lid do\Vn over the lower. 1 f none of these methods brings the foreign body into view he n1ay try to locate it by tltrning the lower lid down. If the speck can be seen, the trained person will proceed to remove it with the corner of a SOFT, CLEfli'\J handker ­chief. l-Ie may drop a .little castor ojl into tbe eye after the ren1oval-thi~ will prove soothing. If the speck cannot be seen or is lodged in the upper eyelid or on the eyeball. re­moval is difficult and the patient should consult a doctor. If the eye is v er:y painful some relief can be obtained white waiting for the doctor by applying cool wet compresses on the eye. The patient should always be taken to a doctor if the eyeball is i.njured. Acid , Jime and other chemicals entering rhe eye should always be washed out immediately with great qt1antities of clean water. Follow with two or three drops of olive or castor oil and cover with a moist compress until the patient is seen by a doctor.-Metropolitan l ns·z,rance Compa11y .
