Knowledge of the structural behaviour of fiber-reinforced brittle-matrix composites can lead to improvements in the material design through an optimization of the components. A Fracture Mechanics approach makes it possible to analyse the composite post-cracking behaviour and, unlike the classical strength theory, to explain certain discontinuous phenomena, that are experimentally verified, such as the size-scale effects or the snap-back and snap-through instabilities.
