Recognizing the significance of health, Government of India launched National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005. A lot of emphasis was given to strengthen the rural health infrastructure, including the physical manpower, and other facilities. However, as on date a huge gap is clearly visible between demand and supply of health centers, and facilities. The current health conditions are one of the reasons for India‘s poor rank in Human Development Index. This programme has put rural public health care firmly on the agenda, and is on the right track with the institutional changes it has wrought within the health system.
