The present study attempts to investigate the problems of understanding English ironic expressions M.A of Applied Linguistics students at Mu’tah University in Jordan. This quantitative and qualitative study includes 15 of M.A students of Applied Linguistics at Mu’tah University. The participants were selected randomly. Two research instruments were used including questionnaires and semi-structured interview. The findings of present study indicate that students’ low level of linguistic competence in English language has a negative impact on understanding English ironic expressions.
