This paper reviews the current status of rural health care infrastructure in the north-eastern region of India, in view of the implementation of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005 that had emphasised on strengthening the rural health care infrastructure in the country. We have analysed the progress in health institutions, availability of health care facilities, the status health manpower and the quality of health care services in the rural areas across the eight north-eastern States. We have found that after the implementation of NRHM in 2005 there has been significant improvement in the rural health infrastructure, especially in case of health centres.
