The Supreme Court’s decision in King v. Burwell has been characterized as drawing “6 million sighs of relief.” In the 6-3 decision written by Chief Justice Roberts, the Court upheld the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies to people who purchase health insurance in exchanges operated by the federal government, rejecting plaintiffs’ arguments that the language in the ACA limited subsidies to only people purchasing insurance on exchanges operated by the states.
