This article studies the role of the Ilhéus County as the stage for the formulation of policies of the Portuguese Crown for the local colonial flora, in the transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. Understanding modern science as an instrument of colonial domination, we find that Botanics had assumed a central role in the Portuguese overseas world, serving as to intensify the exploitation of natural resources in the colonial horizon. In the Ilhéus County it is possible to find a technical staff of naturalist-officials who have developed with relative singularity and expertise in Natural Philosophy the functions as agents of the Crown.
