David G. Van Sickle was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He spent his first seven years with foster parents. When they moved to California, he lived with an uncle and aunt in northwestern Iowa. His grade school years were spent in a one-room school building. He graduated from Iowa State School of Veterinary Medicine in 1957 and went into practice in northern Illinois- large animal beef cattle. He came to Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine in 1961 in the Veterinary Anatomy Department and talks about the school at the time- two years after its beginning in 1959.
