Oral history interview with David Van Sickle, 2008 Sep. 2

David G. Van Sickle was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He spent his first seven years with foster parents. When they moved to California, he lived with an uncle and aunt in northwestern Iowa. His grade school years were spent in a one-room school building. He graduated from Iowa State School of Veterinary Medicine in 1957 and went into practice in northern Illinois- large animal beef cattle. He came to Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine in 1961 in the Veterinary Anatomy Department and talks about the school at the time- two years after its beginning in 1959. The enrollment at Purdue was between 18,000 and 20,000. Van Sickle talks about his tenure at Purdue including a term as the Head of the Veterinary Anatomy Department (now known as the Department of Basic Medical Sciences) and his orthopedic research, both osteogenic research and pathological research. After the age of 65, he continued his affiliation with the Veterinary School on a half time basis until he retired in August of 2009
