Willis Schalliol was born in Elkhart, Indiana. He was working at a local pipe-making plant and was encouraged by a high school chemistry teacher to enroll at Purdue. He held several positions with different companies, such as CTS Electronics, which led to his position at Purdue with School of Engineering. He recounts his military service in the Army Air Corps in World War II. Schalliol also discusses his work with hydrogen bomb assignment in Japan after the end of WWII.
