The Big Sur Ornithology Lab conducts year-round mist-netting and banding, initiated fall 2002, at the Carmel Middle School (CMS). During the non-breeding season (9 August - 31 April), the first priority is to educate Carmel middle school students. During the MAPS periods (1 May - 8 August) the first priority is to collect standardized data on the demographic characteristics of avian species associated with the riparian and coastal scrub habitats of the CMS Biological Science study site. Monitoring during all seasons follows the MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) protocol established by the Institute for Bird Populations
