This paper aims to present a discussion about gender violence as a contribution of the feminist movement – the trajectory, its historiography until the publication of the law 11.340/2006, known as the Maria da Penha law. In terms of methodological resource we are supported by bibliographical research (GIL, 2002) with the contributions of Pinto (2003), Saffioti (2004; 1987), Scott (1989), Louro (1997), among other authors. Based on feminist studies, we discussed gender relations with the aim of denouncing gender inequality and problematizing male domination and female submission, where women were restricted only to the domestic sphere and often they suffered from different types of violence of their partners.
