The high-profile personal information data breaches of 2005 drew considerable public attention to the growing crime of identity theft. In order to equip consumers with tools for ID theft prevention, several statesenacted credit freeze laws. Originating in California in 2001, these types of laws allow consumers to have more control over who can access their credit reports by placing a “freeze†on their records. There has been substantial debate regarding the merits of credit freezes.
