This thesis is an exegetical study of 1 Tim 4:11-16 in the context of the entire letter. It argues that the passage brings into focus the relationship between the themes of salvation and teaching that both play an important role in the letter. The striking use of a~(w in 1 Tim 4: 16 reveals that Paul views perseverance in sound teaching in the church as a crucial means of salvation in the present age. Teaching saves because it enables faith in the truth of the gospel. The outbreak of false teaching in the Ephesian church threatened this truth, and in this context, Paul reminds Timothy that his devotion to sound teaching is instrumental for salvation.
