My M.M. thesis demonstrates four historical periods of vocal performance art song literature in recital format. The Italian classical period will be represented by the Mozart concert aria, L\u27amerò sarò costante, from Il Rè Pastore. A set of four Schubert lieder will act as a bridge between the classical and romantic periods. This specific set was selected due to the common theme of nature present in each lied. This set of lieder includes Die Rose, Nachtviolen, Der Blumenbrief, and Im Haine. A French song cycle by Francis Poulenc entitled Fiançailles Pour Rire will demonstrate the impressionistic era. Finally, a twentieth-century song cycle, Six Elizabethan Songs, by Dominick Argento will conclude the program
