In trauterine growth retardation is associated with a significant increase in perinatal mortality and long term morbidity. In recent years, a n increase in low birth weight due to intrauterine growth retardation has been observed in Villa Clara. A descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study was carried out at the Mariana Grajales Obstetrics and Gynecology University Hospital in Villa Clara during the years 2008-2009, with the aim of determining how a diagnosis is made and what factors have influenced this.
