Abstract

The Yersinia enterocolitica is a gram-negative coccobacillus belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family; its natural reservoir is a large variety of animals, mainly the pig. The transmission to humans commonly takes place through the fecal-oral via by means of the ingestion of contaminated food, water or milk, or both. The Yersinia enterocolitica is an enteric invasive pathogen that causes, as the most common manifestation, an acute diarrhea with typically bloody depositions and the presence of leukocytes –demonstrated in laboratory tests-, fever and abdominal pain.
