Characterization of diabetic retinopathy

Introduction: diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of mortality and early disability in the world. It is characterized by hyperglycemia and late development of vascular complications that lead to blindness in adults and increase the risk of retinopathy. Objective: characterize diabetic retinopathy in patients belonging to the Doctor’s Office 16-10 of the Santa Clara Polyclinic. Method: a descriptive quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted on patients belonging to the Doctor’s Office 16-10 of the Santa Clara Polyclinic from December 2015 to February 2017. The data were collected through a form and the review of medical records. Results: in the sample, 56.1% of patients presented diabetic retinopathy, with a predominance of mild non-proliferative retinopathy in women and in those with 65 years of age or older. The association of risk factors, such as having more than 10 years of evolution, the lack of control of the glycemia and arterial hypertension favored the appearance of the disease. Conclusions: in type II diabetic patients, there was a significant number with retinopathy, the female sex predominated and those patients 65 years of age and older with mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, the disease occurred more frequently in patients with 10 or more years of evolution and in those who were controlled with oral monotherapy, and all risk factors had a significant weight in the onset of the disease.Introducción: la diabetes mellitus es causa principal de mortalidad y discapacidad precoz en el mundo, se caracteriza por hiperglucemia y por un desarrollo tardío de complicaciones vasculares que provocan ceguera en los adultos y aumentan el riesgo de retinopatía. Objetivo: caracterizar la retinopatía diabética en los pacientes dispensarizados pertenecientes al Consultorio 16-10 del Policlínico “Santa Clara”. Método: se realizó un estudio cuantitativo descriptivo de corte transversal con los pacientes que pertenecen al Consultorio 16-10 del Policlínico “Santa Clara” durante el período comprendido de diciembre de 2015 a febrero de 2017. Los datos fueron aportados a partir de un formulario y la revisión de las historias clínicas. Resultados: el 56,1% de la muestra presentaron retinopatía diabética, predominó la no proliferativa leve en el sexo femenino y con 65 o más años de edad. La asociación de factores de riesgo, tener más de 10 años de evolución, el descontrol de la glicemia y la hipertensión arterial favorecieron la aparición de la enfermedad. Conclusiones: de los pacientes diabéticos tipo II hubo una cifra importante con retinopatía, predominó el sexo femenino y los que tenían 65 años y más con retinopatía diabética no proliferativa leve, la enfermedad se presentó con una mayor frecuencia en pacientes con 10 o más años de evolución y en los que se controlaban con monoterapia vía oral y todos los factores de riesgo tuvieron un peso significativo en la aparición de la enfermedad
