Uma investigação sobre o caráter (éthos) e as virtudes morais na Ética Nicomaqueia

The meaning of character in Nicomachean Ethics is examined based on the definition of moral virtue presented by Aristotle in II 6. A brief discussion is presented and the possibility or impossibility of character changing is argued. The mutability of character does not seem reasonable, due to the undisputed/incontrovertible stability and fixity of the moral dispositions (ἕξει̋), as well as the rigidity of a firm and unchanging disposition that is presupposed, for instance, by a virtuous action (II 4 1105a 34). On the other hand, the immutability thesis would lead Aristotelian ethics towards a determinism where human actions would be determined by a fixed character, which raises the question if a characterformed agent is responsible for her/his actions. Therefore, it seems that there is no determinism in Aristotelian ethics, if determinism is understood as something that, by determining our actions, takes away any trace of voluntariness and responsibility in the agent.Discute-se o significado de caráter na Ética Nicomaqueia a partir da definição de virtude moral apresentada por Aristóteles em II 6. Apresenta-se uma breve discussão e investiga-se a possibilidade ou impossibilidade de mudança de caráter. A mutabilidade do caráter parece difícil de ser sustentada dada a incontroversa estabilidade e fixidez das disposições (ἕξεις) morais, além da firmeza de um caráter inabalável que é pressuposta, por exemplo, em uma ação justa e temperante (II 4 1105a 34). Por outro lado, a tese da imutabilidade levaria a ética aristotélica a um determinismo frente à questão acerca de um agente maduro, com caráter formado, ser ou não responsável por suas ações, dado que a ação humana seria mera decorrência de um caráter imutável e, portanto, pré-determinada por ele. Assim, não parece haver determinismo em Aristóteles se este é entendido como algo que, por determinar nossas ações, retiraria delas o caráter de voluntariedade e de imputabilidade do agente
