U.S.-China Relations in the New Century: Challenges and Opportunities

The relationship between the United States (US) and the People\u27s Republic of China (PCR) is one of the most important international relationships in the world today. Both differences and common grounds exist. This study examines the major areas of interaction between the two countries--including economic relations, the Taiwan issue and military relations. It will also examine new areas of cooperation. These include anti-terrorism issues, environmental issues, health issues, and Internet based crimes. After analyzing these areas, the study suggests that economic relations are the foundation upon which the future of the U.S.-China relations will be built. Military relations will also continue to play an important role. At the same time, however, the Taiwan issue remains at the core of U.S.-China relations. It is the number one determinant of the bilateral relationship and holds to potential to put the two countries on a collision course. Despite the fact that differences exist between Beijing and Washington, however, common interests overweigh differences. If both sides focus on common grounds to develop a constructive relationship, the future of U.S.-China relations will be a bright one
