Women Entrepreneurs: Measures of Success as Compared to Men Entrepreneurs

Gender differences of small business ownership, as measured by profitability (sales volume and personal income), size (number of employees), and growth of business, and the relationship of sociological characteristics and industry on the measurements were the subjects of this investigation. A self-administered, mailed questionnaire was used. The results indicated that the male business owners did surpass the female owners in sales volume, personal income, and number of employees. Industry was related to underachievement of female owners. The role of caregiver by female owners did delay initiation of their business venture and inhibited profitability of their businesses.
