Geographic Information System (GIS) technology has been available for thirty years. It is difficult to implement, even though it has been made more user-friendly. An examination of the implementation histories of five GIS in the utility industry reveals common characteristics. Utilities can utilize resources more efficiently in the implementation of GIS by focusing on the following essential aspects: 1) plan for the successful implementation of the GIS, 2) plan for the GIS and its potential uses before implementation, 3) plan to integrate the GIS with other information systems, and 4) plan to set up an accurate master address datase
