The Preparation of Teachers of English in Southwest Missouri

This study examines the strengths and weaknesses of English teacher preparation as perceived by teachers of English in secondary schools in southwest Missouri. Examination of relevant publications concerning English education revealed the significance of the problem. The study was based on data collected from a survey of secondary teachers of English in southwest Missouri. The twenty-three item survey dealt with the teachers\u27 perceptions of their pre-teacher preparation. Through the survey, participants revealed weaknesses in computer usage, dealing with parents and administrators, discipline, and individualized instruction. Strengths were indicated in lesson planning, teaching of literature, and oral interpretation. Upon examination of survey data and related literature, it is concluded that perceptions of southwest Missouri teachers of English parallel the perceived strengths and weaknesses of English teachers nationwide. Since many of the survey respondents received their teacher training at Southwest Missouri State University, the survey results indicate that the university consider examining its present English teacher education program
